Bizarre comments from your missus.

That seems very weak to me.

EDIT: According to them it is technically correct to say the veins appear blue because of low oxygen content. I do not for one second think that the blood contained in these veins is blue, however, a quick Wiki reveals "Vein color is determined in large part by the color of venous blood, which is usually dark red as a result of its low oxygen content." So yes whilst this absorbing low frequency light theory is correct, it ultimately results because of the low oxygen content in the blood. This explains why peoples lips turn blue, blue fingers / lips is a major sign of hypoxia.

Mate, you don't seem to understand that article. Yes the low frequency light theory appears to be the accepted theory. However, it ultimately arises owing to the colour of the deoxygenated blood being carried in the veins. Explain to me why peoples lips or fingers turn blue when they are hypoxic.

EDIT: One of the articles you linked to says the following "We show that the color of blood vessels is determined by the following factors:the scattering and absorption characteristics of skin at different wavelengths, the oxygenation state of blood, which affects its absorption properties, the diameter and the depth of the vessels, and the visual perception process".

Checking for blue on the extremeties is a basic check for hypoxia because these parts of the body turn blue as they have a low oxygen content. This affects the absorption properties of the vein hence why we perceive it as blue.

Speaking of teachers, my old flat mate was a teacher, she was preparing a science class for primary school kids and asked me:

"remind me again...does the sun go round the earth, or the earth go round the sun?"

I hope you said the sun goes round the earth - would have made for an epic parents night :)

SoSolid: all the articles I could find have one thing in common - if you were do to a direct comparision of oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood, the colour difference is apparent but minimal, and certainly in no way does it become the Smurf-blue that you see when looking through your skin. All colour perception is based on the reflection of light, so there are a tonne of factors that can cause it to change. Just stretching your skin over a vein can change the appearance from blue to green, for example.

I guess it is all a matter of perspective, then, in which case her statement may not have been so ridiculous. I concede. We've gone off-topic. I'm a Smurf. :p

Me: My operation date has come through, its on the 12th April (Been waiting for about 18 months)

Wife: Do you have to go on that particular date, i have been invited to Anna's Virgin Vie party and now i wont be able to go

Me: Wow, you really are the most selfish bint in the world arent you

Wife: Not really, your more selfish for having an operation on the same date as Anna's party

Me: Well if i dont have the operation then i will go to the back of the waiting list and will likely have to wait another 12-18 months for another one

Wife: Well its not THAT important is it really

Me: **** You

not one my wife came out with per say more one i managed to catch her on.

Woman at her work is called Fisher. and I know she has about 5 sisters and not to the same dad. I asked her to speak to her friend and ask if she had a sister with a hyphenated name Price.....

Yes she went and asked her if she had a sister Fisher price. With them working in a nursery I thought she would click.

Neither of them did and she came home saying no she doesnt have a sister by that name. QUE me laughing at her LOL

my missus came up with a peach of a comment the other day. We were having lunch and she starts choking on her drink.

her: it went down the wrong hole
her: it went down the food hole
me: huh?? say that again.
her: it went down the food hole not the drink hole.
me: You do realise what you've just said?
her: I don't underst.............. oh noooooo! *she then shrinks into my hoody that is far too large for her*

cue my brother coming into the room laughing after hearing this and saying "are those next to the tube for breathing in and the tube for breathing out?"

She comes out with this stuff all the time but she wont live that one down.

You really are such a selfish man LOL

Can I ask is she blonde?

If you hadn't been so blatantly easy to wind up, I would have reported that as a personal attack.

As it is, I won't bother.

So's yer face.

Ner.

missing your banhammer powers? :p

oh and zootfloot stop being so selfish clearly your op is not more important than her virgin vie party lol :) You were quite restrained there i think.

Ok so there is a colour difference. Secondly, I am not saying the blood itself is blue i am saying that the properties of this low oxygenated blood affects the absorption properties of the vein through which it is flowing. Hence why the vein itself appears blue. There is a correlation between low oxygenated blood and the blue vein phenomena and this is proved by the fact, as previously mentioned, the extremeties of the body, which are normaly a nice peachy colour, turn blue when the indiviual is hypoxic. The only variable in this case would be the oxygen levels in the blood. There is a correlation. I think the girl should not be laughed at, she was patly correct.

? hypoxic flesh turns more purple than blue. Same as venal blood is actually more purple than blue. Look really closely at your veins and you'll see they're actually purple. Keep looking and they'll turn green. All you see is that they're another colour from your skin. Your brain automatically attributes this colour as blue because we've always been told that veins are blue. I'd have said that RL veins are somewhere between maroon and purple.
