So the annual "it's discounted honest" festival approaches. As someone looking for a graphics card at a sane price I'm hoping that there might be real deals.

But what would you guys consider an actually good deal? Is there anything you're looking for - certain cards at a specific price point, or "anything decent at..." or... what? I'm trying to determine my buying decision points before the day, so I don't do anything rash...

Ah welcome to the GPU black Friday hunt :) sure I can give you my list of what I am gonna look for:
1. 4070 ti for 600-650 - this is much lower than current price but let's be honest this card is a scam at 800 price point. We also have the rtx refresh coming which is going to push it to that price anyway so I wouldn't be surprised to see good deals on this card. It still isn't really an amazing card for that money but it would meet my goals.
2. 7900xt for below 700 - fairly sure there should be a deal on this as we have seen this card go for 699 in the past. I am probably going to decide between this one and 4070ti depending on the deals.
3. 7800xt for 450 or premium models for 500 - I think since it's the newest card chances of some amazing price drops here are low but will see.
4. 7900 xtx below 800 and 4080 below 850 - both unlikely but would be really good value especially 4080 (again it's a huge price drop vs current 1100 but refresh next year is likely to push it to that level anyway..)
Might be bit optimistic but can always dream :D

Are these both aimed at just being top end 1440p cards cards or will the offer some longevity at 4k res's too?

Personally I am looking for a 1440p card that can last (with upscaling) 3-4 years, for 4k I don't think anything other than 7900xtx or 4090 makes sense (especially looking how badly the new games are optimized).

I think the 7800XT should be also fine with upscaling at 1440p for 4-5 years. It can be overclocked to a 6950/4070ti level around 22k on Timespy scores.

The 7900XT gets 26K on Timespy so really the 7800XT is not far off and saving of £200 isn’t bad.

It’s on for a good price now at OCUK (£499)…

Agree with you and might end up with 7800xt but since I have waited so long already for it to drop price below 500 I might as well wait 2 more weeks to see if any better deal shows up :)

I was thinking about upgrading my 3060ti to either a 7800xt or a 4070. I just can't imagine a 7800xt any lower than £450 and a 4070 lower than £500 and that just seems like such a bad value.

I think I will just get a Steam Deck instead. A whole portable computer with built in screen and controls for about £150 cheaper than a 7800xt.
 
If 7900XT drops below £700 than grab one. I bought mine when OCUK did the very short lived £699 deal and I'm glad I did...they've not been that cheap ever since!

You've got a generous amount of VRAM with this card, and it delivers near 4080 performance in rasterisation, but falls behind a 4070Ti in RT. It's not, however, going to be VRAM limited in a year or two which is a real risk with a 4070Ti.
 
1070ti, nothing worth jumping to less than 6700XT/3060ti ish power.

Considering you could get that sort of grunt for £370 about 3 years ago (3060ti FE), by now that should be in the ballpark of £250 if not lower for a decent model card. Wishful thinking though, Nvidia and Amd will just continue bending people over. So will likely keep waiting or used 3060ti for the right price.

The 7900XT will be ok at 4k but I wouldn’t bother with a 4070ti as it lacks the bandwidth with a 192 bit bus and also the 12gb VRAM is already a limiting factor in some titles at 4k and will only go downhill from here.
 
I have recently got a MSI 7900xtx for £917, going to keep an eye on them incase it comes available at a much cheaper price then return my current one, rainforest returns and all that.
