Black Friday Deals

I just picked this random item on amazon...

Yes, Camelcamelcamel was nobbled recently. They do show the whole price history for this Rainforest 4K Smart TV though. It is on at £288, supposedly with a 42% discount, (the £269 option is out of stock), but it was available at lower prices for over 6 months earlier this year before a sudden massive increase for a month shortly before the Black Friday sales began.

The BF sales are just a scam to get the highest prices for old stock from gullible people. They'll probably flog that TV for a record low price after the sales are over, if there are any left, to make space for the new model.

It's not like it's the first ever BF. Maybe just look back over 12 months and you will actually be able to see if this happens...

Personally, if it's been that cheap earlier in the year, that's not a reason not to buy it. This isn't the only sale that ever happens.

Literally, the first BF item I saw on opening Amazon, I clicked -

So, last year it did drop lower the BF for a week in the January sales and a few days in April, but all 350 other days it was a lot more. I don't really see how it's a 'scam' or someone should not buy it now, just because it has been 8% cheaper before and likely will be again.

Yes, if you have no need for it, you're a bit silly, but it's still a good price.

**EDIT** Second Item -

Totally randomly picked...

Can someone find me a good heat pump tumble dryer deal please? Was thinking large appliances might have some acceptable deals, I know tech deals are rubbish on BF these days but thought stuff like this might be OK.
Now winter is approaching it's hard to dry clothes outside and and it takes ages indoors unless we put the heating on which obviously is expensive these days. I'm going to pretend this is to save money and not because we were spoiled by having a tumble dryer when on holiday last month :)
You and me both... I've had certain models that I'm interested in bookmarked now for several weeks, none have been discounted. Going to wait until January to see if there's any sales, BF for me has been a total waste of time.

Its been well known, for those that want to know, that black Friday is just a retailers day for suckers.

All the major brands and retailer have been caught out with historic pricing being the same or some even cheaper in the past.

But bottom line is it works for them so people naivety will always work for them in the end.

Thanks for this new interesting information, I'm in profound shock having learned this

Whether people like it or not that there's no saving, the article is somewhat unfair on manufacturers (I work for a manufacturing business so know this part well). Bulk of goods in the world are traded in USD at some point and has to be converted into GBP - if manufacturers are offering a price that is only equal to last year/earlier this year, then actually they are taking a dip on their profits to maintain the same MSRP as the $ price needs to be lower to maintain the same GBP price.

For example, take an item like a TV at £199.99 MSRP. Being simplistic - let's say end to end margin is 8% here's the sums:

£199.99 - VAT = £166.66 - 8% Margin = £153.33 cost to the retailer. Currently we're trading on a 1.17 rate so the manufacturer sells to the retailer at $179.39. If you look at the USD rate this time last year it was $1.33 so the cost the manufacturer was selling at to hit the exact same MSRP is $203.92.

Therefore, even though the MSRP has not changed, the actual cost the manufacturer has to sell at has dropped by almost $25!

It's not ideal of course and everybody including myself loves a discount but that article doesn't tell the full story of the pressures that retailers and manufacturers are facing. Of course there are some retailers right now where profits are obscene and taking the wet e.g. Tesco but there's a lot of other businesses out there really struggling to make ends meat and this type of article doesn't really help matters...

it is absolutely true you can't blindly trust BF deals. but it is equally true there are some good bargains that can be had. I have hardly got anything this time but I got a fab deal on my gaming headset last year as well as a great price on my blink security cameras bundled with an echo show.
in previous years I have gotten nice deals on vr headsets, a flight seat and more.

This BF for instance I believe Asda had the lowest ever price on OLED switches and with a £30 Asda gift card.

I've got a slightly ironic BF problem at the moment.
I tried to refresh the lenses on a pair of Oakleys I've had for 15 years a couple of weeks ago, only to find they don't make them any more. To their credit, Oakley offered me 30% off a new pair of sunnies as an apology.

But I can't use the discount code at the moment, because everything is at 20% off for BF and you can't combine the offers! So I have to wait until BF finishes to buy.

(In case anyone thinks to suggest it - I did try some aftermarket lenses, and the quality was very disappointing by comparison. It is a shame - they were a 30th birthday present from a group of friends.)

Proper first world problem!

But whoever said these prices are the cheapest ever? It doesn't mean they aren't good prices. See my post above, both items have briefly been as cheap or cheaper, that doesn't mean they aren't good prices now. BF means as so many lines will be on sale, it's worth waiting for if you're in need of something as there's a good chance it will be at a good price. I don't really see why some people are so offended by BF...

Are we all getting excited about Cyber Monday, knock it out of the park deals on electronics?

No, me neither, garbage deals compared to ~10 years ago when this US frenzy started over here.

Random but I might get a water flosser.

Story...went to the dentist last week for a clean and check-up, he said "Your brushing is flawless but do you use any brushes in the gaps?"

I do, but maybe a water flosser can help more.

Not exactly exciting stuff.

This, Black Friday is actually full of some really good deals and some are the near enough the best you’ll get particularly if you want Amazon branded stuff like fire tv sticks or Sonos items which only get reduced about twice a year. The same advice applies to all sales check your prices and remember it’s only a saving if you were going to buy it anyway. It seems to have become some cheap sport to point out that these may not be the best prices of the year every time someone someone mentions Black Friday.

I get where you're coming from but I also think sometimes it's more a case of the 'saving' being that you are getting more utility. So for example suppose you planned to buy item X for £100. Then item Y, which is a superior substitute good for item X is discounted to £100. You buy item Y, which you were not going to buy originally. If item Y has a longer lifespan than item X then arguably you are saving money in the longer term as you won't need to replace it so soon.

Don’t disagree with that but you are still buying a hoover when you wanted/needed one. It’s the people who bought random crap they hadn’t planned on because it was a ‘bargain’ that got truly sucker punched!

a bit like my steam game library. it's full of literally 100s of games untouched. many never will be. some were in a bundle along with a game a did actually want but plenty were so cheap I couldn't say no to go into the pile of shame

Which is why i feel less guilty buying trainers, as I will go through them eventually.
