Because it's a half life 2 modification, if it was a half life modification it wouldn't use this engine. You say it's a modification of whatever game you start modding the mod with.

It's not a mod because it uses the source engine though. The source engine is available for people to use without it being a "mod" of any of Valve's games.

Still, for it to be 12am Saturday in the UK as he feared, they'd have to release it at the odd hour of 4pm PST (where Valve and the BM leader are). But yeah, as said, the countdown will end on 7am PST and so 3pm in the UK.

But it (presumably) uses HL2 assets.

When looked at technically Black Mesa is essentially an independent game with its own assets. The only required component is the Source SDK Base which is basically the bare Source engine but closed to modification. This also includes some of the assets used in HL2. The thing that sets it apart from any other game though is that it cannot be sold commercially and is still a 'mod' in the sense that it requires something else (SDK Base) to work.

Maybe you just don't understand what I mean, rather that what I said not making sense?

Valve have built the source engine to use with their games, they've then made games using the source engine. They also make the source engine available for commercial use.
