Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops for PC was downloaded illegally over four million times in one month, according to new data collected by the website TorrentFreak.

The data, which was gathered from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers, shows Black Ops edging out EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on PC for the top spot. This should come as no surprise to most gamers as Black Ops already generated over $1 billion in revenue for the publisher in just over a week.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for PC was 2009's most pirated title with 4,100,000 downloads.

Things look a bit different on the home console front, however. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was tops on Wii, which was downloaded illegally nearly 1.5 million times while EA's Dante's Inferno hit the most downloads on Xbox 360 with 1.3 million.

Below are the top five most pirated games for PC, Wii, and Xbox 360 as of Dec. 26, 2010, courtesy of TorrentFreak.com:

*shrug* who cares? The only ones who should be gutted really are Bioware and ME2.

4.3 million people downloaded BO because they didn't feel like paying £40 for the single player, same goes for BC2 surely? Mafia practically encouraged piracy.

Surely Downloads == Attempts at piracy, regardless of whether or not they got it working?

The point is that its not 4 million users. Its likely only to be less than a million which have had to attempt a few downloads each. The instant any newspapers get this they will say OMG thats (4million x game price) lost. Its the same arguments time and time again tbh!

The OP or article don't claim 4 million users. They state downloads pretty clearly.

Regardless of the number of people.... Piracy sucks.

shame that so many people downloaded ME2

I actually wish mafia 2 had been at the top of that list, seeing as how the devs/pubs tried to milk the game and rip off its customers more than probably any other game before it.

If im honest im not bothered at all at people downloading big games from mulimillion £ companys, its when people download games from devs who actually worked hard (for example, Amnesia, who i think only had like 5 people working on it).

If you don't want the game then don't pay for it, it's still stealing.

you could say that you don't like particular songs from an album so I downloaded the ones I like.

Theirs times I have no quarrel with piracy and theirs times I do. You can bet everyone has done it though.

Games are too expensive, good thing I like about the Steam sale at this time of month I will gladly pay less than £10 per title.

If games were at a reasonable price like they was in the late 80's/90's I am sure people would be less people bothering to pirate games in the first place.

bet less than 10% of them actually get the game working

Pirating a game usually consists of download, install and copying 2 files into the main game directory, sometimes it doesn't even include the last step. You're fooling yourself if you think almost everyone who pirates can't get a game to work.

For me Steam is the biggest counter to game piracy. I used to pirate a fair amount of games, then i discovered steam sales and pirated some and bought others. Now i never pirate and just wait for stuff to appear cheap on Steam. It's never been about grudging a few quid, it's been about ease and the complete rip offs that some titles are.
