Black Swan - New Darren Aronofsky Movie

The film isn't about ballet, ballet is just a vehicle.

Yes and Aliens isn't a film about Aliens, they are just a vehicle for the main character played by Sigorney Weaver. Oh wait no, it's a film about Aliens. :p

It's fine that you and all the other males here like Robbie G who use moisturiser and make up :p enjoyed it, I didn't because a film about ballet with an actresses head put on a dancers body with CGI doesn't really do it for me.

It was a 2 hour film about ballet.

If it was just a 2 hour film about ballet I would have been bored stiff. I wasn't bored stiff because it was far more than a film about ballet. The hallucinations and psychological side of it was pretty disturbing.

From both a hallucinogenic and psychological view I thought the film was pretty weak to be honest. But maybe that was because I got bored by two hours of ballet. Let's break it down - what happened? Lead ballet woman too old, another one wants the job, struggles a bit, has a rival, previous ballet woman dies, a bit (few seconds) of woman sexy stuff, woman hates other rival and thinks she kills her but she was hallucinating, final ballet scene and the woman dies because in her hallucination she had actually stabbed herself not her rival. fin.

Oh wait, I forgot the orange eyes. That was another 2 seconds of the film but not relevant at all it seems, she didn't turn into an undead zombie.

Did I miss anything else? It was 2 hours of ballet, dress it up how you want. It's fine to admit you enjoyed the CGI ballet - I didn't.

CGI ballet ? CGI actress heads on dancers bodies ? about ballet ? what on earth are you going on about ?

was billy elliot about ballet too ?
was fight club about fighting ?
was the wrestler about wrestling ?
was the machinist about machining ?

last 3 films are very comparable to black swan and they are about the person , not about the 'thing'

fair enough if you didn't enjoy and went to see if for the wrong reasons (zombies wtf ?) but you dont need to try and belittle people that did enjoy it by trying to tell them they must love ballet

I couldn't really care if you enjoyed the film or not but to completely fail to see that it was far more than a film about ballet is just bizarre. I'd understand if you could acknowledge that but simply didn't like it anyway. It sounds to me like you couldn't see past the ballet because of some alpha maleness going on.

I saw this last night. I was quite indifferent to be honest. I liked Requiem for a Dream but not this as much. It seemed like it was trying too hard to be a serious cult-ish pretentious film - it's hard for me to describe.

Certain bits of the film were good, Natalie Portman does a very good job and the portrayal of Nina's life being white swan and turning black and so on was quite well done.

However, I don't think I'd watch it again, not in a hurry at least. Quite evident why it's up for some of the Oscars though.

Started watching it the other day. Can't say I was impressed. Natalie Portman's performance did not impress at all. I'm no dancer, but she just looked awkward and lacking any grace in most scenes, imo.

I did ballet (and other styles) for 6 years and can safely say that her dancing was faultless and that she was graceful and technical especially for the white swan parts.

As for looking awkward thats only there when she starts learning the black swan routine which is more or less what the whole film is about - that she doesn't naturally fit that role and that she metaphorically turns into the black swan in real life...

The contrast between the black swan and white swan style were very well done as was the whole movie in my opinion. Very few films have gripped me from start to finish like this. Incredible!

It's faultless because for the majority of the dancing Natalie Portmans head is CGI'd onto a proffesional ballet dancer.

Excellent film though i thought!

minority rather than majority , id gues she was half decent if she recieved so much praise from other dancers...

She was able to pull it off. Except for the wide shots when she has to be en pointe for a real long time, it's Natalie on screen. I haven't used her double a lot."

I was a bit indifferent about this film after seeing it. Some parts are excellent, others drag a bit. Still interesting all the same.

I can understand however, why Portman is up for an Oscar. Totally immersed in her role for this film.

Thought it was great, much darker than I imagined it might be and if you know your Dario Argento films you will have spotted a few obvious nods to his work.

8/10

I just got back from seeing this.

I thought it was brilliant! Lots of w.t.f?! moments though!
Still confused about certain sections though!

She trained for 9 months to do this :D

They barely used her double! It's almost all Natalie.

I saw it a couple of nights ago now. Very impressive spectacle, but then I like films that make you think. I'm not normally (if ever, really) one to say this, but although I'll probably get it when it comes out on DVD I wouldn't imagine it'll have the same impact as it does in the cinema. The big-screen ballet/psychosis/intrigue thing really benefits from the cinema experience.
