blackberry email issue

Not even they are completely sure from what I've read, either way it's bloody irritating and there lack of updates is just annoying people even more.

hehe I've waited since mid-Aug for my new 9900 on Orange, it FINALLY gets delivered yesterday and RIM have one of the biggest service outages in ages on the same day!

Yep seems to be down again...i wonder WTF is going on...someone has really messed up somewhere down the line...usually BB is pretty reliable, i think this must be the 3rd time my BB has gone down in the last 3 yrs ive been using BB's.

To make this crystal clear, RIM hold a lot of the infrastructure that is required to make BIS and BES run to which the networks have zero access to or control over. While there are local servers for each network RIM built their service with them as a key cornerstone so that in order for networks to sell BIS/BES they would have to pay RIM for the privilege.

That £5 a month you pay for Access to BB services, now you know how it works :)

Edit: yes, still down. Orangehelpers twitter is having a riot answering everyones unhappiness I see :)

Hilarious, spend extra money on BIS package and get an extra unneeded cog in data transfer. When cog fails....

Which hardly happens, i mean 3 yrs ive been using BB and this is probably the 3rd or 4th time in those 3 yrs that ive been without BB services...not the end of the world really.

this is very bad news for RIM. forget the technical headaches for the end users.

some serious questions need to be answered once the dust has settled.

that being said. i've found the BES service to be a very stable platform over the past 5 years. I just worry that something as serious as this could come about. You would assume they have resiliency built into everything these days.

Google has had much more frequent outages before the pitchforks come out (although they are typically upto 2hrs long) you just don't see them because it doesn't cripple the handset to such a degree when it goes (hell, only certain recent handsets have the white/green "Google Link established" identifier)

yimpster - this is part of the deal and how they control their security. Basic linkage/method of working for BES for example is:

BES Server (AES encryption here) > Secure link to RIM Canada > RIM Network Centre > Network BES service (eg Orange) > Data bearer eg GPRS > User Equipment (decrypt here).

This happens for everything - BES is basically a proxy which is great if you're a business - handsets can access Intranets, you can control their internet access, lock down the handset, you name it - RIM lets you control it.

for BIS just imagine a proxy, but it's open to the internet and supports public mailboxes like Gmail/yahoo et al.

Myshra - I totally get the RIM infrastructure i've been using it for almost 7 years and a big fan. What I don't get is how they could be so reliant on one building/server. They should be able to lose internet in a country and still be able operate worldwide.

Seems they have dropped the ball. I'm deffo not trolling and would only like to better understand how this can be so widespread and for so long.

I couldn't care less if a service drops out for a day -a company can recover from that. This just seems much deeper.

From Orange email update at 16:18

Update
BlackBerry Messenger is still unavailable for some users. Internet Browsing services are recovering and RIM are providing 50% capacity to affected users. Email services are almost fully recovered with 90% capacity returned to affected users. Until this incident is over, affected users will receive delays in sending and receiving emails.

Are you sure? Others seem to disagree.

Cant believe it's still down. Gotta be 3rd time this year!

No wonder RIM are losing in this competition.

Google has had one outage on the Market to my recollection, the difference being even if the entire Google network went down, my phone would still be able to send data to other non Google services.

How anyone can defend such outages over such a period of time is beyond me.

Just setting up my 9900 now, I'm assuming it won't see Network Date/Time or allow me to configure my Hotmail (only gives options for Enterprise Activation) due to the global issues today?

Yep im sure...others?? like who?? so far only one person has said they have had more outages etc...whereas im talking about major/serious outages like today and yesterday...something is seriously wrong or has gone wrong for it to be down like this for more than 24 hrs..typical its based in Slough of all places...that place itself should be nuked in all honesty lol.

Of course ive had a few minor outages but nothing on this scale but it hasnt really affected me as such...im still getting emails albeit slowly and still able to web browse.

Its been a pain the last couple of days, but its not unheard of, BT seem to have some kind of UK outage at least once a year, Virgin seem to have them a lot, etc etc, sadly infrastructure in the UK just isn't great.... but I agree Slough is dire!
