What I hoped the plot turned out to be was that he was actually a great agent back in the day but turned rogue when his investigations constantly got held back by corrupt politicians. Then the few people he managed to stop were always the low level guys, so he goes rogue to learn who all these people are and take them down. I quite like the idea of that, but I feel it's more likely that he wants to teach her to take over, that she can do more good as a bad guy controlling how much damage they can do rather than as a lowly agent.
Either way the agents not trusting him, constantly wading in is already a bit old, how many times will he disappear and reappear himself before they get bored of that particular story feature. As everyone has said all along, she is a woeful actress and doesn't work, her complete u-turn in her personality in almost every other scene would likely be painful with a good actress let alone a bad one.
Ironically, and quite surprised you missed this, but the director is Joe Carnahan, who is far from 'new' and 'trying' to be stylish. His track record is great, The Grey, Smokin Aces, Narc and I even enjoyed The A-Team for what it was, a popcorn cash in.
The only one of those I haven't seen is the Grey, Smokin Aces is precisely what I was getting at, fancy camera work(trying to be) no substance, I hated it. Narc was meh and the A Team is complete cack.
I think the biggest problem with the show is actually Spader, there is something about him, I think he has to be reigned in big time to be good rather than just, creepy and weird. I think you needed Spader at his best and reigned in and more likeable, basically someone likeable(loveable maybe) as the rogue agent, charming or funny, creepy doesn't quite work as, early days but I get the feeling the character being endearing would work so much better.
