I still think we wouldn't be having this conversation if the 5090 was worse (than it's rumoured to be). But is that what you, or any consumer, would actually want?

At the end of the day, consumers, noobs and enthusiasts alike, will vote with their wallets. That's the only kind of vote that counts.

Interesting thought. I have heard in recent coverage on the topic that high end sales were really slow but they clearly were not voting with the wallet earlier in the gen cycle. Will hopefully see some more data on the sales side of it creeping out to gauge how it really went.

TBF I think it's something Nvidia doesn't care about.

If they sell 1000 units at 300 profit, or 500 units at 600 profit per unit the money they make is the same.

It's a long game for Nvidia, to give the illusion that their products are worth more than they are, and it's working, people are accepting these higher prices, they bitch about it sure, but they still pay up.

Nvidia are a company, out to make money so I expect them not to 'care' about anything like that. Anyway what you said here is what I picked up from nightwish, there was not much voting with wallets until the latter end of the gen timeframe. If people are avoiding the 80 + 90 series now because they are >£900 there is only so much enthusiasts you can sell to. So maybe there is just about enough of that and nvidia know how to restrict the volume there and get the price they want.

What is quite clear now is the new strategy of making the lower products appear to be less enticing. So we get the 4090 (as we know here) being the 'best value' shifting some of the 80 sales to that end because most folk realise what you got for a 1200 was poor.

When I bought my 3090 (From new at launch) my plan was to have it for 5 years. It's been 4 and I just got a 4090.
Paying £1400 for a gpu was something I'd never done, the most I'd spent before that was 2x Titans which cost £1800 for the 2 at launch. I have absolutely no interest in paying £1500-£2000 for a gpu. It's just nonsense, which is why I just bought this 4090 for more than I'd like really but knowing it'll keep me going for another couple years at least. I dread to see where the GPU market is in 5 years. Maybe Apple will start selling apple silicon in GPU form.....(which I then wont buy as I never have and never will buy an apple product)

Bit of contradiction there.

And now we're back to informed users (enthusiasts if you like), of which we are a very small minority of the gaming community and not the average consumer.
Ultimately uninformed users will always get bad deals. The answer is to become informed and inform those around us.

Nvidia can use whatever naming scheme they want as long as they provide truthful specifications of cores, ram, bandwidth etc. Didn't they get sued over the 970 with it's 3.5G of fast + 512M of slow ram?

And the 5080 will likely be around £1500, No thank you.

As far as I'm concerned Nvidia are no longer a choice when shopping for a GPU in the future.

Indeed. At that price no thanks. But surely we will get an improvement on price for performance? As in say 4080 performance should now be £700 or less?

Will certainly be interesting to see how it goes. I am not so bothered as got a card I am happy to skip a gen with.

Probably same crap as usual, top end cards less gimped and good VRAM, mid range and below bare minimum or worse just so they can do a Super refresh a year later for best milking.
