I think it's great that people criticise hip-hop based on the what, 5-10 major artists that are at the top of the chrarts? Actually, these artists could be described as pop-rap artists. I use the term artists loosely, too. However, real hip-hop is massive and full of thousands of artists most of you will never have heard about. They don't feature in the mainstream top 10 charts (50 Cent et al), but actually make excellent music.
Common is an artist that springs to mind. He just recently made it big and you don't see him promoting violence, in fact, he has some very well thought of lyrics.
What I'm saying is, David Cameron is right to criticise those artists. However, he is wrong to criticise the entire genre based on what little he knows about it, or what most of the world know about it. True fans know the gangster image is just a face that the genre can't shake off, whereas the real artists are trapped beneath it, because they aren't rapping about it.
