Blame it on Hiphop

I think it's great that people criticise hip-hop based on the what, 5-10 major artists that are at the top of the chrarts? Actually, these artists could be described as pop-rap artists. I use the term artists loosely, too. However, real hip-hop is massive and full of thousands of artists most of you will never have heard about. They don't feature in the mainstream top 10 charts (50 Cent et al), but actually make excellent music.

Common is an artist that springs to mind. He just recently made it big and you don't see him promoting violence, in fact, he has some very well thought of lyrics.

What I'm saying is, David Cameron is right to criticise those artists. However, he is wrong to criticise the entire genre based on what little he knows about it, or what most of the world know about it. True fans know the gangster image is just a face that the genre can't shake off, whereas the real artists are trapped beneath it, because they aren't rapping about it.

Modern rap/hip-hop exists for only two reasons - as a vehicle for the oversized ego of the 'artist' churning it out, and for the wannabes to use it as the soundtrack to their alpha male mentality. Note I use the term 'artist' in the loosest possible way.

Load of LANGUAGE! that applies only the top layer of filth that HipHop has been tarnished with; ruining a fantastic urban movement of expression.

I got the impression that Cameron was criticising the BBC and Westwood for playing some dodgy "music", rather than trying to ban the whole lot.

If people want to listen to it in clubs or at home, that's up to them. Taxpayers money shouldn't be spent on such questionable programming.

I really don't get the whole scene - white people pretending to be black, and posers with guns pretending to be tough, what's all that about? Put them up against some real hard men, like the Krays or Richardsons, and they'd all run home screaming for mummy.

I was asking the wrinklies at work what they thought of Rap/hip Hop and all of them agreed it was about gang culture and shooting each other.
Whether that is right or not is down to the media but thats how old uns perceive it.
One of them also made the suggestion that the stupid hand movement that all rappers make is that of the firing of a gun and I seem to be agreeing with him.

So the 3 fingered W gesture is just to show appreciation of the music that comes from there?:)

It is hard to explain put if you wanna put it that way... i guess so. You know when people are reenacting what they say in a musical video in the shower? Yeah something like that. Kinda like trying to moonwalk when you here Micheal Jackson's beat!
Having said that, you wont go about moonwalking or say eeeehh eeeeh all the time... :)

I've just read this thread and think it is discusting .

Rappers are always making the effort to seem appealing, and to set a good example for our children. Anyone that thinks otherwise can go to hell. I mean look at this, prime example of 50 Cent setting an example for our children.

Because you have been allowed to live here, maybe it would honourable of you to show your loyalty to the country that allows to lead the kind of life you lead, and could never have had back in nigeria.

just a thought

But Kids only see the top layer! That's the problem!

You can go on about how good the genre really is, but all kids hear is what is on the radio and TV.

If you look at all the music channels, any hiphop / rap song will be full of either half naked girls (not necessarily a bad thing, but do you wonder why so many little girls want to look like hookers now?) or a gang theme (guns / knifes / fighting/ drugs etc) or possibly both.

To say the music that is most accessible to kids doesn't promote gang culture is naive.
