I think President Trump's reactions to a group of fascists dominating the attention given to each side at Charlottesville and the existence of a de facto two sides on each side (i.e. 4 sides in total) and the existence of a movement devoted to imposing authoritarian rule on the world in general and the USA in particular by use of violence and intimidation (i.e. antifa) that's politically astute enough and skilled enough in propaganda to have a chance of success was very good ethically though very bad politically (which improved my opinion of him significantly). It would have been easy for him to take the unethical but politically useful route and makes things worse. Instead, he made a reasonable interim statement, gathered evidence and then made a more complete reasonable statement based on that evidence. Which was bad for him politically because he didn't make the desired ignorant knee-jerk response demanded by the dominant media spin, but it was the ethical thing to do and it was what a leader of a country should be doing. Although they should be able to do it more coherently.
