I agree with the scheme, but why is she being sent on it after being unemployed for a few weeks as opposed to the infinite amount of dolescum that exist and have been playing the system for years?

How about a system that requires a number of applications be submitted each week before payment can be obtained?

People seem to forget that the JSA is there to help people legitimately seeking jobs. How on earth is the example in the OP desmonstrating this?

Sounds like a good idea but still I would not put too much faith about a number of apps before being given the allowance. We all know how easy it is to shoot a dozen cvs to job apps just to "qualify" for whatever target the jobcentre may apply.

I think it's fairer that the unemployed are asked to work in exchange for the allowance they are given. It may suck but hey, if "you" don't like it be our guest and not take it.

I dont see why I should work so others can sit at home...

she can do the job and be happy she is not in aftica and is just left to starve to death.,...

do the work or turn down the benefits..

Sorry, but what's the issue. Get a job or don't take payment. It really isn't hard finding a rubbish job. It just takes willingness to do any type of work and a bit of effort finding it.

Rubbish, a gap in your CV due to being out of work looks terrible, uni students are always being asked to differentiate themselves from the masses, this is usual down to the volunteer work they have done in the past.

I think there's a difference between the get up and go required to ship yourself to Africa to build houses and the get up and go required to be shipped to a discount book shop by the job centre.

edited to add the quote, this thread is moving fast.

That's all fair and all mate and I don't think you sound abrasive at all, I think you sound quite fair and I respect your point of view.

But mate, one thing is thou, it's MY taxes as well, and I would rather MY taxes be used to help single parents and people in need, then to fuel some rich fat cat CEOs Switzerland bank account.

I appreciate what you are saying, and you are correct but I think it's an unintended consequence of the scheme. In principle (as I interpret this scheme) is to force people to get into some kind of employment to keep their basic skills up to date + encourage them to get a full wage job down the line.

Unfortunately, when it comes to cases like your partner who is apparently much more skilled and qualified, she is disadvantaged through this scheme. Nonetheless you can't examine each case individually, they have to apply a blanket measure - aiming at the "professionally unemployed" mind you and those that are unemployable due to long time absence from the work environment. The companies are of course benefiting from all this I suppose but what is the alternative? There has to be a middle ground achieved.

Happened to my girlfriend last year. Albeit she only had to work for 2 weeks, but even then I was furious, I worked it out and she was being paid about 1.40 per hour or something. Absolutely outrageous. She completed the two weeks as she wanted to earn some favour with the job centre, thankfully she got a paying job straight afterwards.

The situation is absurd though, total rubbish.

The problem is that we should be supporting people who are legitimately seeking jobs.

If she refuses to work such a frankly ludicrous scheme, then yes, she could take a low paid job if she wanted to. But then really, what support is being offered? None as far as I can see.

I see no reason why it couldn't work if appropriate administration and safeguards were put in place.

Well it's exactly how you used to get JSA afaik.

A lot of people would just apply for things with no intention of following it through just so that they'd get their payout. This system gets the lazy people of their arses. Of course, it's by no way perfect but it's still much better IMO.

I agree that those hours are ridiculous. I also think that the work should be more in the way of community service or charity.

I wish people would stop saying this, it's ridiculous.

Maybe I should introduce you to my (now ex) neighboors. You don't realise how many people are taking advantage of the system. Unfortunately, people will take notice and focus on those who are exploiting it rather than those who are in honest need of it. Therefore what people are saying has a grain of truth in it.

At the end of the day the world only needs so many 'executive assistants', if people actually did decent qualifications or went down a worthwhile carear path then perhaps they would find themselves in more stable employment.

The X-Factor generation has arrived!

Madness, putting people up against each other.. How could anyone suggest someone work for free..... For two months!

I do understand now. I misunderstood you before, sorry.

What support do you need to get a low paid job. People simply think they have gcses/a levels/degree and think they are entitled to a decent job. Loads of people are "overqualified" you take what ever job you can get. Far far to much of I'll only do x-job or x-pay mentality.

Job centres haven't done that for a while though. I went to one last summer, and as soon as the staff heard I wasn't looking for help claiming benefits they lost interest. I was pointed to a console which showed their website. As their website was, as of last year, just about unusable from home or their store, this was not helpful.
