WoW and EVE will only ever be the lasting MMOs sadly. And when they die, the genre will pretty much die. MMO's are a thing of the past :(

Disagree that MMO's are only a thing of the past and the genre will die. (perhaps just my opinion) for the last 10 years they have been significantly watered down, cloned and then hyped to hell before release.
Very few publishers are able maintain F2P model and more often end up becoming just a hack and slash with little in terms of challenge or content offering very little new.
Commonly bundled in with a nice pay to win store, or look at my new costume I just got out of a loot crate "I look live a level 50' - challenge vs rewards is in a bad way.

Subs or pay for time models are likely to make a come back.
There's are a few development teams out there going back to the roots where challenge, adventure and the social element is prime focus however don't anticipate these to materialize until late 2019/2020.

The problem now is we hear so many times about the next big MMO or this one is the new wow killer and they continuously fail to deliver hence we have in essence become extremely skeptical.

Certainly not dead, just paralyzed for the time being.

Because it apparently costs $60million just to make a crappy attempt at translating and disabled features for a Western port

I think it's a case of too high risk for what the reward would be
$60 million for the the total cost of the game? Maybe but there is absolutely no way it cost that much to make a western port and if they are claiming that they are flat out lying.

The market is still there and I hope some studios take notice.

This.

Too often upcoming MMOs have been about trying to be the "next big thing", Wowbeater or appeal to the masses. MMOs will find their footing again once people make more niche MMOs, aimed at a target audience and uncompromising in that aim. One of the things most appealing about Pantheon for example is that its aiming to bring back the non-instanced dungeons, slower/tougher combat, harsher death penalties and heavy reliance on group and social play that the old MMOs were built upon. That means that Pantheon wont appeal to everyone and nor should it. There will be many who slate it at release for not having aspect X or aspect Y of WoW (for example) and thats fine, because its not an MMO aimed at players looking for that. So far Visionary Realms have stuck to that path and I hope they will continue to do so, its an MMO with a clear target audience and it can be a great success if it continues that target. MMO devs need to stop trying to make pizzas with toppings to please everyone and just focus on making a really really good pepperoni pizza.
