Hey GD

Not sure if title is right, but is it possible to block certain channels on YouTube. On our Smart TV my son watches the standard fayre kids watch. However, there are a few exceptions that I am not entirely comfortable with him watching. Is there any way that I can stop them coming up in search?

Mods please move if wrong section

Plus it depends on what the channel is actually showing, i.e. bad language etc is normally well filtered but some of the other "poor taste" channels which have adults dubbed over kids cartoons talking about pee/poop partys and violence etc aren't always caught - https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech...lters-designed-keep-out-teens-kids/922511001/

It's not actually bad language thats the issue. He watches one of the channels where the kids are constantly getting gifts, going on shopping spree's in London at a young age, giving his younger brother an Iphone X etc. I know you can't protect your kids from the world but it's painting a world that is based on utter greed and is completely false.

Unfortunately that's going to be very indicative of a lot of the stuff on the internet. Instagram, Facebook etc. If people aren't getting offended, they're showing off. I guess you need to make sure he understands the difference between that and real life

Could do with a whitelist to allow the channels you want rather than blocking but no idea if youtube allows you to do that.

Parenting does seem harder these days, advertising towards kids has become so much darker with really underhand ways of influencing children (that kid earning millions reviewing toys must make the toy companies an absolute fortune). When I was a kid you just saw the ads on tv or went through the argos catalogue thinking about how much pocket money you'd have to save up to buy a new toy.

"you are not allowed to watch x,y,z"
"you watched x, grounded for a week"

You were clearly a very well-behaved kid.

That’s just called parenting... Learn them the difference.

Parent seeks advice and support on being a good parent. Gets lectured on not parenting hard enough.

I doubt they do - it would interfere too much with their ability to promote other channels and push content they want to push. I feel for OP - I don't care so much about the language kids here or mild sexuality, I do care a lot about the values that are promoted to them. Society seems to support parents in keeping parents from the mostly harmless first category, and little at all about the second. I suppose because the values pushed are the ones those in power approve of. Having a quick look at the YouTube source, the channel ID seems to be identifiable. I could probably write you a WhiteList plugin for a browser if you like. Might be a fun micro-project.

Ah, in that case you know your kid best but I would consider having a talk to your kid if they're old enough to understand "rich/Poor" etc, explaining that what they see in these videos isn't "normal" for 99.9% of us and just have a discussion so they're aware of the facts, a bit like a birds and bees chat only about rich kids being spoiled :)

Yep we had that discussion, He's 9 and we talked that this isn't real life, you dont just get sent Iphones and all the latest gadgets etc. He understands that. I guess I'd still like to filter it out but hey, thanks for all the responses people :)

More innocent times, when kids shows weren't just attempts to make them buy things interspersed with ads that some sneaky algorithm tied to what they were watching.

Happy days.

Although those three cartoons you listed basically existed to sell toys...

Yup they killed off Transformers in the animated movie based on Hasbro’s directions to allow the best merchandising opportunities.

Think it made for a better movie though. Though Optimus Prime dying is still the greatest tradegy I faced as a child.
