Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

I am lucky enough to have both an 8mb UKOnline ADSL connection and a 4mb Blueyonder connection, the UKOnline gives me steady 58k/s upstream and 750k/s Down. That is significantly higher than Blueyonder, however genral browsing of the internet, streaming apple movie clips etc, feels no different going from one to the other.

Gaming pings on UKOnline BF2 are around 12-25 (time ofday dependant etc) and on Blueyonder between 9-20.

I can't see how you find Bulldog any faster The-Ninja if your are syncing at a slower speed on bulldog than you get from Blueyonder.

Maybe my area is swamped more with blueyonder customers giving thigns slight more latency, i dont know, but its whats happening, ive stil got a 512 line from telwest here i downgraded it and me mom wanted to keep it on so thats why i kept it, but for genreal internet use it feels better.

Your telewest pings are much better than pings i get on BY 4 meg.

I found out that I'm going to need a better modem to get the most out of this 10M as my SB3100 only has a 10Base-T ethernet on it (had it since Blueyonder first came out).

I'll try it out first, but I hope I can get a newer one without too much hassle if I need to.

Cable should always feel more responsive than ADSL, and it's got nothing to do with latency (per se).

What so an adsl line thats pinging and has a faster up/down stream than a cable line is going to feel slower than the cable line. LOL.

Tolien, doesnt matter what line your using if the stats/latencys are the same your going to get the same.

Should be ok.

Given the total bandwidth of the ADSL connection is most likely considerably less than the bandwidth available to the cable connection, yes. I'd suggest looking up things like TDMA (IIRC it's TDMA, it's something not vastly dissimilar anyway).

Nope. I'd suggest you go away and do some reading up.

Last quote you made was a question, sorry. But still i dunno how you can say a line with same stats one cable one adsl can have much difference.

Which is why I suggested you go do some reading (mainly because I don't fancy trying to explain TDMA).

Just a heads up for those of you wanting to know when they are possibly due to be upgraded. If you look at THIS PAGE it tells you planned maintenance (upgrade) for all areas. The last time upgrades were done they were listed as a planned broadband outage for upto 1 hour, see Linlithgow on 31st August this could be the first upgrade :)

Hope this will save folk a lot of phone calls to an already over busy blueyonder tech!

Scoop ive used various programmes such as newsleecher but there always seems to be missing files on the news servers.

I take it you use PAR files?

As for files missing that hasnt got anything to do with the grabbing software its you isp's retention. In the many years i have been with blueyonder i have experienced bad newsgroups service once and that was when they changed something at their end. I only usually get up to 5 days tetention maximum if you want longer you would have to pay a subscription.

Shame it's London only. :(

Nope. They're offering it on at least one exchange up here too (slightly north of London).
They're completely new, using their own kit, so time'll tell what it's like. You've also got to pay extra for a static IP, and pay quarterly in advance, so I've yet to be impressed.
There's also regulatory issues with ADSL2+.

Either way, it's got not much to do with either Blueyonder or Telewest.

Ok i cant be bothered to read all of this thread so this has probably already been asked but... Im moving into a house while at uni which will have broadband set up, we just need to decide wjhich connection we want, I.e. 1mb, 2mb or 4mb. Are all the packages being upgraded ie the 1mb turning into the 2mb etc. or is just trhe top one bing upgraded? Whhich one would be the best to get and when is the upgrade coming into place?

Thanks

Upgrades are thus:

512k -> 2m (£17.99)
1m -> 4m (£25)
2m -> 10m (£35)
4m -> 10m (£35)

Upstream will be 256k on 2m package and 384k on 4m & 10m

Upgrades are starting in September and scheduled to be completed by the start of 2006, although I'd expect it to be done sooner than that.

How many are going to be sharing the connection? That's the real question you need to ask. I'd say go for the top one as £35 split a few ways is peanuts.
