Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

Well its better than any other information I've seen
You're really confusing me now.

When you first posted the list you added a smilie which lead me to believe that you knew the list was a joke/fake. Your two posts since seem to indicate that you're not so sure.

The list is complete garbage. It was posted to the newsgroup as a joke. This hasn't stopped many people, obviously desperate for any rollout information, from speculating as to its accuracy. This is what I meant when I said this thread had become pointless.

Since I last posted, explaining my thinking, there have been 8 posts. All but one of these have been comments related to a schedule which is complete rubbish. Exactly how is this useful in any way at all?

Certain posts may be useless, however the thread isn't. The thread serves and will continue to serve as an information point for TW-speed-related stuff.

Would you prefer to have 10 different threads about "when will area X be done?" and "do I reset my modem?" and stuff? Probably not.

Now of course there'll be people who don't understand that that schedule is a joke, or untrue, or whatever. That's just life.

So - let's drop the "when will my area be done" posts. And the "this thread is useless" posts. And get back to the core topic: speed upgrade discussion.

BY will make information available on their website when they have it. At the moment the only info is the notice that work will start at the end of September, and the status page showing outages for network work, etc.

If the Dons want to delete the useless posts then they will, otherwise how's about they get ignored.

I guess if you want to inform people that crap is being posted, use the RTM button:)

Well that's the point isn't it? If everyone drops the endless "when will I be done" questions and gets back to the core discussion then the thread wouldn't be pointless anymore will it?

I may be of the opinion that the thread is currently pointless and full of worthless prattle but I'm not nearly anal enough to start reporting posts.

Agreed.

looking at getting blueyonder for my student house next year and found this lovely 9 month contract: http://www.telewest.co.uk/forms/student1.html

'cept they seem to quote the old speeds, can anyone confirm you can get the 2mbit (soon to be 10mbit) on this student contract

im trying to call BY now, but have been on hold for ages :(

edit: just got off the phone with them. Due to be connected on the 19th. apparently the area already has been upgraded and we should have 10mbit the day we connect

excellent :D

pity they want a £125 Deposit!!

thats is an old page ...Order before October 31st 2004!

If they still do the 9mth student contract I don't see how not you can't get the 2mbit (soon to be 10mbit)

Yes you'll get upgraded to the new speeds, everyone will.

We're on an ancient BY Workwise product at work that they've forgotten all about and haven't sold for years but we still get upgraded along with everyone else :)

Vertigo, what does the business service offer in the way of upstream, and is the price comparable to the home package. I was lead to believe their business service (well one of them) was 2mb/512k up at £125 a month, connected to a different path on their network to guarantee service level?

they do still do it, and its 10meg.. yay. :D

also got free basic tv for a year

Does this only apply to older members? because im on f2s atm but tempted to go to by due to being quite far away from my exchange.

Thanks for clearing that up mate :D Bit miffed because although im on the 8mb package my line can only handle 1mb right now on f2s :(

We signed up when the Workwise product was brand new. At this time, it was merely the exact same service you received at home, with no extra service level agreements at all, but a higher price  At the time it was the standard 512/128 product at £55 per month instead of the £25 for home users.

Basically they totally changed workwise around to be based around hosted Exchange services and the like. The lower speed options vanished and the prices went through the roof. Through all of this, however, we've remained on the original product, which you can no longer order.

We still pay £55 per month but have been upgraded along with everyone else so we're now on 1024/128. I fully expect the latest upgrades to give us 4096/384 for the same £55 we're currently paying. Obviously we'll be paying £20 more than home users for the exact same service but in the grand scheme of things I don't believe it's too bad.

Telewest also have a "Business" department which is a level above Workwise, and offer full leased line services, blocks of static IP addresses and so on. At this level you'll probably get improved SLAs and so forth but I don't believe the standard Workwise products come with any such guarantees, although I could be wrong.

From all the forums/newsgroups I've read, I haven't seen anyone upgraded yet.. so I think that list on page 10 is wrong :( (although we knew that deep down :p)

The 9 month contract was dropped at least a year ago - telewest found that they were actually LOOSING money on each of these due to the cost of install etc so they were scrapped when telewest started looking at ways to actually make a profit :)

Looks like ntl have started their upgrades (or testing at least).. my mate in Belfast just send me a screencap of him pulling 1200k/s from a news server
