Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

hi schnipps.
sorry to be so late with answer got called out for pc repair.
yes it was jumping up an down all the time.
on 4meg using xnews etc it stays on 4 meg all the time now.
i am now staying on £25 4meg seeing that its stable all the time not worth £35 if its not going to work properly.blueyonder tech were not much good at curing problem.
cheers ian.

Don't forget, they said upgrades wouldn't be complete fully until January. I'm not gonna switch to 10mbit until I've had the 4mbit upgrade for a while - then hopefully any speed problems will be fixed :)

I've been on the 1mb service and i seem to have been upgraded to 2mb rather than 4mb. Im in Maidstone, Kent if that matters. Has anyone else experienced this?

Could it be my modem? I was one of the first blueyonder customers to sign up many years ago and im still using the original modem.

Cheers.

7. What if I am not downloading at my new speed?

If, after completing the speed test example above, you are still not receiving your full download speed, then there are a few more checks you can complete. Please check your Network Interface Card (NIC or Ethernet card) or, if you have one, any home network equipment, making sure it has a fully rated 10/100baseT port available to the Internet. Some older network cards and routers only have a 10Mb port, and these are not fast enough to transfer the data that is being downloaded. This gives the appearance that you are not connecting at the correct speed. You may also see this issue if you connect the modem to your computer using the Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection. Please try connecting your modem to your computer using a Broadband Network Interface Card, using a CAT5 (RJ45) cable, and after confirming that your network card and any other equipment does have the 10/100baseT standards outlined above. This should greatly improve your download speed. In addition, if you currently have a Motorola Surfboard, Model SB 3100 Cable Modem, you may also have the issue of slow speed. If you are a Blueyonder Elite customer (10Mb), please see the section below relating to having this model of modem swapped out.

You may also be able to improve your speed by changing your MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings, take a look at http://www.speedguide.net/ for instructions.

Besides faster DL from NG's, what other benefits will there be for average surfer/surferette by having a shiny new 10meg connection.

From what i've been lead to believe most sites won't support 10meg speeds anyway. It will be like buying a shiny new porche and hitching a bloody great big caravan on the back of it everywhere you go.

Utterly nothing and newsgroups are hit and miss, i get 400kmax from them, i wouldnt bother if i where you, the 4 meg for 25 a month is a steal

What's the point in BY increasing there speeds to 10meg then, other than it looking good on their advertisements. My DL speeds have been absolutely awful since they started mucking around with a perfectly good network.

Why didn't they just drop the prices of everyones packages instead of screwing up everyones connections?

Faster downloads for multiple files, and file downloads not saturating your connection :)

The issue of sites not being able to sustain 10mbit/sec from multiple users is an interesting one.

Few sites ratelimit connections (that I've seen anyway); most simply restrict the *number* of connections.

One thing's for sure, the advent of faster home connections will certainly show up the shoddy webhosts on shoddy, overcrowded networks :)

But as it stands....most sites run from a 100mbit/sec server on a backbone network at least 10x that capacity, with some high-capacity routers and so on....the larger sites shouldn't have any problems, but the smaller sites (for example, project sites and so on, think kernel.org but smaller) may if, for example, 500 people start downloading a file - the connections won't be able to cope.

But...bittorrent will gather pace. Especially with the faster upload speeds. It'll get a *lot* more common as file sizes get larger and the number of downloaders (and potential high-speed seeders) becomes greater :)

Blegh....I've babbled a lot.:D

hi schnipps.
your dead right newsgroups are hit and miss on speeds.
i was downloading this afternoon at 4meg all the time.
tonight its all over the place sometimes down to 1meg.
not worth paying £35.thats what i have done went back to 4meg £25.
at least thats worth the price.
not a lot of sites let you download at anywhere near 10meg.
if people think that they will be able to download at 10meg on lots of sites they will be sadly mistaken.
cheers ian

Thanks for that. My modem is plugged into my Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I would have thought that could handle 4mb as its a fairly modern router.

The MTU is set to Auto in my router and is 1500 by default if set to manual.

If anyone has any ideas i'd really appreciate it.

Cheers.

[Edit] Well thats odd, the Adslguide.org speed test continues to report that my connection is 2mb but im downloading at about 350k/s from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk.

I'm confused.

[Edit2] Forget that, its down to 275k/s so it definately aint right. The speed test here also says im on a 2mb (or less) connection.

[Edit3] After plugging the modem directly into the laptop the speed is now at 4mb according to the speedtest linked above. The adslguide speedtest says its a 3mb connection. I'm downloading from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk at 500k/s though (althought its dropping very slowly. I cant figure out if i have hardware/software problems or if its just a busy night.

Grrr.

contacted blueyonder today as my speeds are as fast as dial up I should be hitting 10mb

The guy told me there are huge problems with the network here in gillingham which is on the list of urgent fix and not to worry.

Ive tested this, if u are want to down load 2 files, eg ati driver and ati control panel then the sum will be greater than a single download. Also download managers can make 4 connections and then you will probably be hitting ** cap.

It does make a surprisingly real difference when u want to download the latest patch which ofcourse is several hundred meg. Ofcourse with p2p its hard to hit your max speed unless you are connected to someone in sweeden with their massive bandwidth. If 2 BY users wanted to swap files then with a 10Mb connection (348K upload) they would at best be hitting 45Kb/s.

I agree 10Mb connections should give fast access to a file, but I dont agree that a subscriber should feel that he has to saturate his 10Mb connection 24/7, since with contention this effects other subscribers in his area.

16. How can I make the most of my bandwidth whilst downloading?
The use of a download manager such as GetRight, FreshDownload, DAP etc... will manage your download by opening more than one connection to a server thus maximizing your download speed. Using a download manager will also help when performing speed tests as it will automatically combine the speeds of several connections. Check here for information on download managers.

its good BY are upgrading speeds, but i think they are shafting the 10mb people like me. 384k upload is a bit of a rip compared to the 4mb 384k up as well. I know the pro's and cons of changing the upload seed, but if your gonna give 4mb with 384k then 10mb should get at leat 512k.

Ist there a law or a phrase the upload speed is 10% of the download or something.

Playing games will have no effect from 4mb to 10mb unless upload is changed.

Well, doesn't sound like a router problem then. It sounds like it may have been some network congestion when you started your first speed tests and then after that, the network congestion eased and so you were able to get increased speeds. Best bet would be to wait till early in the morning and try downloading from a blueyonder site with your original setup, to see if you can get full speed. I have no problem getting 4mb constantly through a wrt54g
