Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

The max you will get is 42kb/s substained. you will never get anywhere near 48 substained transfer.

I get about 36kb/s sustained on my NTL 3mb line which only has a 300k upload. That's only 1 or 2 kb of its max, so I would say you could get a good 46kb/s out of the new 384k BY upload, on a good day anyway. Saying that I usualy get about 20kb/s download more than I should, so maybe my line is a little dodgy lol

The NEW 384 ? Im on 4 meg with 384 upload and the MAX substained is 43kb/s via ftp other than that its usally 40kb/s why would this be any different.

If you speak to a knowledgable member of staff at Telewest they will confirm that the upgrades will indeed start at the very beginning of September, and they may also be able to tell you when you area is penciled in to be done, I spoke to my TW rep and he confirmed that Newastle/Gateshead area was coming 3rd week of Sept, providing that other areas upgrades go according to plan.

A nice note for people who just want a low end service also, it may not happen by the end of the year but to compete with the like of bulldog and UKonline TW are looking at offering basic 512k BB and Telephone for between £9.99-£12.99 per month with uncapped downloads, considering a phone line is like £10.50pm it's a blooming steal :)

Oh also, if you are on 4mb and you are not upgraded within one month of when the upgrades start you'll have to call up to get a credit on your account because as far as I am aware they have no automated system to do this. SO thats £15 for every month you wait from the first area being completed. Or you couldjust downgrade to 2mb and wait for the upgrade to happen

More packet loss and high ping nightmares for us gamers :( Every time they upgrade speeds pings get worse. I hope they upgrading there hardware for this as most of the UBR's are already overloaded, but they dont care about gamers.

yeah, when I first got BY back in 2000 or 2001, the 512K service gave me a 20-ish ping. Ever since they upgraded to 1M & 2M it's been about 50ms.

worth it though for the extra speed in other online activities I suppose. :)

Been on bulldog for a few days now, only getting 2.5 megs down tho :( 60kb/s upload tho, and i gotta say in genereal it seems faster than my 4 meg for brousing, also one thign i noticed is its streaming cpabilities, ive always been on blueyonder and thus why i noticed it.

i use my xbox to stream a lot of music videos and trailers, and tho cahch up shed laods faster than on blueyonder 4 meg, also viewting trailers "streaming" on the pc also seems a lot better than my BY 4 meg.

Anyways saying all that because of only being able to get 2.5 megs im finding 10 meg too tmepting so im going to cancel bulldog :D. Glad i didnt cancel telewest now :D

Shame bulldog cant give me a decent pipe :(

BY would in my opinion bebefit a great deal from more upload as ive expearianced the plesure of it with bulldgos upload.

EDIT- saw an interesting post over at ADSL guide http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showfla...2003349&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

Now i'm really unsure what to do as i like gaming.

i seem to always have better pings than other players in the UK, its about hops as well as bandwidth, eh ?

My cat urinated on my surfboard modem (a few weeks back) and blueyonder brought round a replacement newer surfboard modem, free of chardge within two days. I think thats bloody good service, and to see my 2mb line jump up to 10 mb, well i'm ecstatic. I was thinking about bulldog, but then worked out it would be more expensive after the cheap period.

Also the newsgroups @ BY rock.

Can anyone reccomend a stable newgrabber other than Grabit and outlook express.?

thnkx

:)

No swearing.

Gilly.

Newsbin.

Dont know what gives better pings but i know this, ntl have got it going on for pings, i was playing CSS today and 4 players each had under 10 pings was amazing.

My pigns with 4 meg blueyonder ranged from 3-40

My bulldog getting me 15-20, but i was definatly shocked at ntls.

Anyways seems the pings might get worse after the upgrade, but onyl time will tell.

WHAT!?

Not horrible, ghastly Blueyonder with it's pathetic and useless 384kb/s upstream bandwidth? How on earth are you going to be able to do anything with that? ;) :D

What are you getting on Bulldog then? Come on post some ADSLGuide speed tests!

What's interesting in that thread exactly? All I see is the usual ADSL fan-boy rubbish about how use cable is (not that you don't get cable fan-boys posting how rubbish ADSL is mind :) ).

All the issues surrounding upstream capacity have been discussed to death on the Blueyonder newsgroups, I suggest you take a look. There has also been a very informative technical explanation of the issues and the future direction this stuff will take from one of the technical bods at Telewest.

Vertigo why must you try and draw me in yet again. ADSL Fanboy ? heres some facts for you

Im not a adsl / cable fanboy

Telewest CANNOT give no more speed untill all kits are upgraded and all users have new modems Wich is why it wont happen for a long time.

Blueyonder pings have gradually gotten worse with each upgrade "how do you think putting 50% of its customers on almost over twice as fast internet is going to effect this situation?..

Blueyonder will be brilliant for bulk downlaods. Full stop.

A doubt even you vertigo the suprt troll could argue with that.

I said im finding it tempting. Altho i play a lot of online games so couldnt be dealing with gay 50 + pings.

I didn't call you a fan-boy, I said the thread you referred to contained posts from fan-boys.

My pings are fine thanks, although it remains to be seen how the latest upgrade will affect them.

Not trolling at all, just amused that after all your derogatory comments about the BY service and its upstream bandwidth, you're now looking at running back to them from Bulldog, which not so long ago you were claiming was so much better.

What upstream speed did you get out of Bulldog out of interest?

I said its tempting, there 10 meg would indeed be amazing for bulky downlaods, and yes the price is brilliant. Im actually glad they have baugth the priceing down, as i said before price wars is good for customers :)

For the third time...

What upstream speed did you get out of Bulldog?

60kb/s And i feel it makes the difference in general use, it feels faster for brousing sites and streming media. Pings are between 15-20 in css and BF2.

I am lucky enough to have both an 8mb UKOnline ADSL connection and a 4mb Blueyonder connection, the UKOnline gives me steady 58k/s upstream and 750k/s Down. That is significantly higher than Blueyonder, however genral browsing of the internet, streaming apple movie clips etc, feels no different going from one to the other.

Gaming pings on UKOnline BF2 are around 12-25 (time ofday dependant etc) and on Blueyonder between 9-20.

I can't see how you find Bulldog any faster The-Ninja if your are syncing at a slower speed on bulldog than you get from Blueyonder.
