Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

Probably a few thousand very sad people.

How is it sad? If you are getting a significant upgrade to something for no cost at all whats wrong with getting a little bit excited?

I am sure there are sad people who get excited about a new set of car wheels, or sad people who get excited about getting a new fishing reel...you get my point.

Sad no... over eagar maybe ;)

According to Telewest the upgrades won't start until the 20th. Linky.

Regional upgrading of our networks takes place from 20th September and will be completed in early 2006.

But yes, I did have a quick check this morning to see if I'd been upgraded anyway:p

Go read the blueyonder usenet groups as two areas have been upgraded this morning. :)

Nothing wrong with getting excited over the upgrade, but it'll come when it'll come and the modem will reboot itself automatically.

What's sad are those waiting until 00:01 on September 1st and then rebooting their modem manually in the desperate hope they'll get the upgrade a bit quicker.

I'm excited about the upgrade myself and obviously want it sooner rather than later but I don't sit at my PC rebooting the modem all the time in the desperate hope of getting it. I have a life.

I notice TW are offering a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee for new customers - they must be pretty confident about things. Seeing as they don't advertise contention ratios or warn of reduced speeds at peak times, I reckon you would have cause to moan if you don't get the full 10m and maybe put you on a new segment or whatever its called. Just a thought.

Ooh nice. I did read the newsgroup but there was only one person saying they've been upgraded, and they didn't give much away. Any idea what areas? (in work and can't check).

Would be interested to know which areas have been done now. [save me rebooting the modem ;)]
You lazy ***. :D If you are really in that much of a panic to get this upgrade, why don't you just unplug your modem each day? Not that hard. And easier than getting someone else to do the work for you :p

some people are so impatient,i doubt that any area has been upgraded yet and u may have to wait until early next year for your area.

So far I can only see one post claiming the upgrade has been done and there's a lot of speculation that this is a hoax.

Frankly I tend to agree. As someone posted, the TW site says it will commence on 20th and if even one area had been upgraded this morning the newsgroups would be covered with posts to that effect.

Guilty as charged! Though I plead extenuating circumstances as the cable modem is down behind the PC and I would have to stand up and bend over to reach it! - Potential injury!

Get a BigPointyStick™ and poke randomly at it from a distance.

This multi-purpose remote control can be purchased at a reasonable price of £50 + P&P. Though due to OCUK's competitor rules I can't tell you where to get one.

The stick can also be used to poke at lazy people to make them get up and do some work.... :D

Well there will be 5 of us, the problem is i dont know who they are. We will have to get broadband as its being installed but itll depend on what people want as to what speed but on the face of it the 1 or 2Mb ones look promising.

Jus looked at the BY site and it says free pc protection software, how good is it as thatll save me £20-£30 if i dont need to buy virus and firewall.

Free? Often there is a catch. :)

If you need "Free for home use" then get this little lot for nothing:
http://free.grisoft.com - AVG Anti-Virus
http://www.zonelabs.com - basic firewall is free (all you actually need)
Also sygate and kerio worth checking out tho Zone Alarm easiest for a new user.
http://www.kolla.de and http://www.lavasoft.de for your spyware killers.

Often the "free" software is just a subscription to Norton or McAfee packages. Though each ISP gets their own deals sorted.

Is this true? We initially had 512k but that was upgraded for free to 1mb, does that mean I'll now get 4mb broadband? We have a contract with Telewest who provide us with our Phone, Internet and tv. When will the upgrades occure? :)
