BluRay Already Won The Format War?

If I have to pay £20 for a movie I aint interested in either format. I wasted hundreds on dvd's I barely watch. Apart from 4 or 5 of my absolute all time favourites I will not be wasting money again.

It will be cheaper to rent or watch them on demand.

People will buy any old **** film to show off their new woowee format and never watch it again.

The player that gets strapped into my pc will be the cheapest writable media.

/\ /\ /\ couldn't agree more. I will only buy a few choice movies to add to my collection from now on as it's a complete waste. The only films I have bought on BluRay so far are for my daughter so I know they will get watched over and over and over again.

Sony always think there ahead and that they have it all worked out. BlueRay isn't going to do very well, too pricy and too many people boycott it. Does anyone still buy low-res PSP Movies for twice the price?

BlueRay will be great for thier games but not movies. Keep the movies to DVD/HD DVD

This makes me unsure as to whether i want to buy the HD-DVD player for my Xbox 360. If all studios are releasing movies on Blu-ray apart from Universal, then i might just save the £130 and put it towards buying a PS3.

But BluRay and HD-DVD are about the same price iirc! There's no way you can compare BD to UMD though IMO. UMD was nothing more than a gamble that people would want to start watching films on their PSP's where as with BD and HD-DVD one of them is going to take over the batton from DVD. It's going to take a while for either format to take off and by then Sony may well have sold quite a few mill PS3's which means a very big install base for BD players which in turn means more backing from the film studios.

this is what i'm thinking of doing.... there is already plenty of known sound issues with the 360 hd-dvd, so i may in the end opt for the ps3....

Casino Royale, on a 50 GB dual-layer disc encoded in MPEG-4 AVC.

Due in March 19th, just in time for the PS3, funny that...

Should be a stunner or is that a Killer purchase

Rumours are that the PS3 launch in the UK/Euro market could have the title included as a limited bonus...

Yeah I heard that too, just like Tallagagda Nights was the limited bonus in the states we get Casino Royal.

Well I know which film I would prefer (and it aint TN I can tell ya)

Software / films being the same price onboth hidef formats (and only slightly pricier than standard DVD) while it wont be evident to most (with less than 40" tv's) once much bigger units get sold -and even more projectors - then its potentially much more obvious what quality you are paying for.

Both sides will fight it out - and LG is in the middle already with a dual format player - and pc recordable drives for BR are already in stock here at the same kind of price as a ps3 so its only a matter of time and more brands distributing drives before this cost is a lot more palatable.

Its a long fight yet imo

having watched quite a number of HD DVD's now i must say i cant wait to see this transfer. Built up quite a collection of 1080i material over the years but the proper HD formats blow them away..

I still think HD-DVD will win easily.

And either way, I'll be buying HD-DVD since BluRay hasn't got a patch on it in terms of quality.

Plus all the best studios are backing HD-DVD

i know the report says BD is selling 2 -1 compared to HD-DVD BUT hasn't HD-DVD sold more in general due to it being out that bit longer??

As far as i remember only universal is backing HD DVD, and if you look at the film charts for last year there's only 1 Universal Film in last years top 20 (thats at no. 18) Where as Blue Ray has 12 exclusive titles in the top 20

HD DVD is promoted by Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, and Intel, among others. In terms of major studios, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios, The Weinstein Company/Genius Products, Rogue Pictures, and Studio Canal, and is non-exclusively backed by Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Warner Music Group, New Line Cinema, HBO, and Image Entertainment (including Discovery Channel),[23] Magnolia Pictures,[24] Brentwood Home Video, Ryko, Koch/Goldhil Entertainment,[25] .HP, LG, Lite On, Onkyo, Meridan and Alpine also support HD DVD non-exclusively. Also with history as a reference, the adult-movie/pornography industry may have a big influence in the HD DVD versus Blu-Ray format war, at least when it comes to home rental and retail purchases or pressed movies as it generates multi-billion annual revenue worldwide, (with US$57 billion in annual revenue worldwide reported in May, 2006). [5] HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by several adult-movie/pornography studios/publishers, like Digital Playground Inc., Wicked Pictures, Pink Visual, Bang Bros, and ClubJenna Inc. (which on 22 June 2006 was acquired by Playboy Enterprises), and HD DVD is also non-exclusively backed by Vivid Entertainment.

HD-DVD has backing from all the studios that make far better films (for my tastes) than those of the studios backing Blu-Ray.

It offers better quality and is region free, cheaper, and easier to get hold of.

So it's HD-DVD for me.

Personally i think the high price and the emergence of legal movie downloads will limit the impacts of HD content, i would much rather download a DVD quality movie through an xbox/set top box/PC for £10-12 than buy a HD quality movie for £30.

Either way dual format is the way its going to be imo, you buy whatever disk format for the movie you want and stick it in your dual format player.

...Easy.

I think early versions of BluRay had some dodgey picture quality. But i think it is better with the later releases

But iirc i think BluRay is getting the better audio write ups since it is uncompressed. Though only about 3 people will probably notice the sound difference lol

As far as PC writing/storing media is concerned as well, Blu Ray is much better. Holds more information, writes faster etc.

I don't care which wins tbh, but I won't be buying either until one or the other has become mainstream.

Are the access times quicker on HD-DVD though??
Also i haven't seen an HD-DVD drive for the PC yet, are they available??

I wont drop 600 on a dedicated player of either format yet. But having the PS3 there is certainly going to influence me to buy BluRay Movies until i do get a dedicated player.
