And with that Skoda Octavia example, your credibility in this thread went negative. I've driven both and there is simply no way the Octavia is even close to the E90. The Octavia suffers from being deliberately cheapened by VW to avoid it competing too harshly with Golf and friends - things like a crappy fibre handle for the boot etc.

Fair enough, let's agree to disagree.

I had the skoda for a couple of weeks and the 320d SE for around a week and concluded that there was little between them quality wise, dynamics wise, the bmw was obviously ahead but not by a staggering amount.

Well 25k for a new 320 SE maybe a little much, i would recommend a less than 1 year old second hand M Sport model at 25k with extras and low mileage or less.

Octavia and Mondeo, as nice cars as they are, they are really family saloons rather than compact execs aren't they?

Another thing also to consider is that both octavia and mondeo consume more fuel, though the vrs is faster, the mondeo is not.

A friend of mine has a pretty tidy E46 2.0d Touring M Sport and has noticed that the E91 2.0d M Sport is considerably faster so begs the question, what's the difference? I know remapping can impact torque quite effectively but would remapping his E46 take it from the current 150bhp to the early E91's power of 160bhp or even the later E91's of 170bhp? or is there more involved in these new ones that means it's out of reach and he should just save up and buy one?

Thanks.

to answer your remapping power increase question, the 150bhp 2.0d seems to get +35bhp and +56 lb/ft with a generic remap

Well the e90 320ds are junk
His E46 looks superb, handles great, has strong mid-range acceleration and has been faultless. I doubt the superior E90 would be junk.

That's a substantial amount, jeez. As mentioned, reliability is in question here so is that a large increase in boost?

I took that quote from a remapper who remaps to keep reliability and driveability rather than getting every last bhp from the engine, so that will be well within the cars limits in terms of engine/drivetrain - I don't know anything about the suspension and brakes on the car though so can't comment on that aspect

My Jap crap opinion on the 320d coupe that I went in, is that it was resoundingly good. Good power, good ride, and quiet.
