BMW and M Power Owners

More weight, higher fuel consumption, inferior handling, more tyre wear.

I'd be amazed if it got within 10mpg of the G30 530d - remember that has the benefit of being RWD instead of 4WD, too. Though 10mpg isn't exactly a 'small' hit in fuel consumption.

It's the elephant in the room in all this new-found petrol enthusiasm from government and the mainstream press - nobody seems to be mentioning the fact that the reason we have so many diesels in the first place is because our fuel is exceptionally expensive..

That did make me laugh a bit, I remember when you were telling people 8mpg wasn't enough to warrant a diesel over a petrol. I can only go with a couple of days in one, I am confident it will do 40-45mpg on a run, the most I have ever got out a F10 530D is a smidge under 55mpg which is identical to an xdrive 335d F31 so I don't think the xdrive system gives that big a hit. Of course they may have got a little more out the new revision of the 530ds engine.

Out of curiosity what makes you think the tyres wear more ? They do wear differently in that they normally all need changed at once, not a bad issue when you want to change the brand of poor factory tyres. The wifes Mini just got a new set at 40k. A FWD Mini would have been through 2 sets of front tyres and well through the 3rd set at the mileage with the rears not far behind. Similair story to my sister's S3s although the rears go 2-3k more than the fronts must have less rear bias.

Is it the BMW comprehensive policy? If so read your policy documents on wear and tear..

"Failure of covered components for wear and tear is also included up to 100,000 miles from registration, for policies sold on or after 17th March 2016 only."

I've had my policy for 3 years, i did ask to change the direct debit date of it and i think they set me up a new policy for this as they couldn't just change the date, i shall give them a ring anyway and see. Thanks for pointing this out.

And look what the markets response was to a diesel that did 8mpg more than the petrol - no petrol examples sold, all diesels.

We have an FWD Mini and it's nothing like that heavy on tyres. It managed 50k miles on a combination of the original RFT's and a set of winter wheels which are about half worn. So 1.5 sets of front tyres in 50k.

Had a drive in an M2 this morning having jumped straight out of my M135i and whilst the car definitely felt much more connected than mine I was a little underwhelmed by it's straight line performance, which is all I could test on the open road. Above 5K RPM it seemed to have a bit more go than mine but otherwise there was very little in it (unsurprising really).

The brakes, however, were much better. Much more immediate and better feel, and in combination with the wider tyres it will out-stop an M135i/M235i pretty comfortably I'd expect. The ride is sharper and you definitely feel more through the rear of the car than in mine. It had a manual gearbox which was fine, but the clutch was SO light I struggled a bit with it to begin with. I'd definitely order the M-DCT (which is what the previous owner changed it for apparently).

I imagine it would be an absolute hoot on track, but I'd definitely be wary of spending £50K on one for daily use. From inside the car there's basically nothing to distinguish it from mine, and therefore I don't think it feels like a £50k car ought to for most of your daily driving. There are no options available for it that you can't get on the M240i for example.

All that said, the one I drove had done nearly 19k miles and the dealer wanted almost 40K for it. That's pretty decent value retention considering this particular example was ~£45k new.

Also whilst I was there I asked (out of interest) about the new 5 series, and the dealer told me that they are selling more petrols than diesels so far, and more 540i than 530i as well so Fox, there's hope for you yet!
Interesting as a lot of reviewers state it is more like what an M3 should be. As the later ones got bigger and heavier.

There's one near me and it looks awesome in that light blue colour

Nope that's obviously true, all depends what people value most I guess :)

I've always been all about cars, we are all a long time dead so I gave up penny pinching years ago

Isn't it the case though that the BIK on cars like that is so silly it's probably cheaper to just buy it yourself?

Looks I completely agree - it looks absolutely great (the one I drove was that awesome blue). I think I was just left a little underwhelmed by the performance compared to my M135i. I've no doubt that on a track it would be a very different animal, but for the roads I really think I'd feel a bit ripped off in one compared to what I already have. I guess I expected it to be quicker than it was with a ~50hp advantage, but it just didn't feel like it was. I was only behind the wheel for 20 minutes so not enough to form a truly valid opinion but enough for first impressions and it just left me feeling a little bit meh.

Maybe my opinion was skewed having also driven an M4 which was appreciably quicker than mine.

Great car, definitely. Would I like one? Probably, yes. Would I choose one over an M3/M4? Personally and for what I do with my car 95% of the time, no.

Hopefully I'll be able to buy an F80 M3 in the not too distant future.

The N55 engine blows my mind. I genuinely can't get my head around how it can go from being staggeringly quick to averaging 40+ mpg on a long run.

It was as high as 44 at one point.
