BMW and M Power Owners

Assuming yours is an M-Sport the BMW part number will be 33526780081 which translates to Sachs part number 311 410.

Avaliable from carparts4less for a snip over £50 each.

The part number for the M-Sport "additional bumper" aka bump stop is 33536767335 which translates to Febi part number 36869, avaliable for £14 a pair from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bilstein-Absorber-Protection-Genuine-36869-G/

Mine is an SE model.

Why would you go to a dealer for replacement shocks on a 10 year old car? I did the rear shocks and bump stop rubbers on my mum's 2009 E90 on the driveway using OEM Sachs shocks and Febi bump stops for £100 and 2 hours of my time from getting the tools out to putting them away. First side took 1hr30mins, second took 30mins.

It was in for warranty work and they do a vehicle check every time it goes in.

I dont have a drive or any tools so a garage is my only option

i emailed a local german specialist garage who said they use sacks, i assume miss type and meant sachs. they have quoted £240 +VAT.

@Robi, we're waiting in suspense for pics and a mini review :p

I only have a couple of pics but I'll try to grab some more over the weekend. I'll do a mini review tomorrow.

All I'm going to say now is that I don't think I'll ever get bored of the sound when you first turn the car on :D:D

They're even cheaper on the SE.

I'd forget German specialists - you don't need to be a specialist to do this job at all. A local £35ph garage will do it for £70-80, rather than the £200 in labour that the specialist wants.

I assume most rear shocks will be similar in the way they attach. It is a very easy job. I was 3 bolts per side on the Passat, and then swap over the top mounts / bump stops. Any garage could do it easily for you. Heck, you could do it easily in an empty car park if you had the couple spanners required for the job. It's almost harder getting the wheels off the car than it is to change the rear shocks.

35 quid an hour?!

Yep. My local garages charge between 35-40 per hour.

I did the rear shocks on my E39 and it was much harder than taking a wheel off. The entire interior had to come out the back before you could even get to the top mounts. It was a complete pain. Perhaps the E90 is easier but I would have thought they were similar.

Yeah, I just had a look and can see that you get at the top mount from in the boot. So it would be a little harder I guess as you have to remove some trim. Still, not exactly difficult, but point taken. Not like the Passat where it was one bolt at the bottom, and two at the top, all accessible from the wheel well / under the car.

Cross posting from the Z4 thread

I have had a 07 Z4M for 3 years now, before it I had MX5's in some guise or other for a good 10 years.

I definitely got spoilt rotten handling wise with the MX5's, especially the last one I had for 6 years with upgraded suspension and lightened everything.

I love my Z4M's engine, I love the looks and the interior, I cannot get on with the handling how ever. I have swapped the tyres for Pilot Sports as needed and it has improved slightly, but on the latest early morning hoon out it really cemented in me that whilst the car is fast, and handles well, its version of handling is not for me. It is a car that likes brute force, not a scalpel like my old cars, and for the kind of road driving I do, getting the back end out and forcing yourself round corners is not fun on British roads, never mind how crashy over bumps it is.

I don't want to change it for a lot of reasons, its a really good example and its options are great, but I think I am going to have to unless someone can suggest to me some handling mods that might improve things? I am thinking of changing to a Boxster S of the same age or maybe slightly newer, which from what little test driving I have done and all the user and journalist reviews have said, is much more my kind of car.

Pic of yesterdays morning drive out group just because.

That photo makes the Porsche look like a toy!

I for one wouldn't slight a Boxster at all. Don't know what your budget will be but as I've said before, is it not worth trying to hold out for the new Z4 to perhaps see if that offers what you're looking for? It's being plugged as a sports car, rather than tourer etc. so may be right up your street.

Had my car in at the dealership yesterday for a minor niggle - got it back and they'd washed the outside (told them not to) and the inside was covered in greasy finger marks, the door was scuffed, the thresh was scuffed and the carpet on the driver's side is filthy.

The steering wheel was completely glossy. Spent 20 mins on it just now and it's back to its usual matt finish. The door and thresh scuffs have buffed off but haven't tackled the carpet yet.

Only looking to spend £25-30k, not new sports car money sadly.
