BMW and M Power Owners

A good write up that, you summed up my issues with the M4 right there, but for me the two major issues were the sound as you covered it just sounded terrible. But the car I drove and you don't seem to mention this too much but man was it firm. It was BMW stock car no mods, it was running the electronic suspension so press a button to make it firmer, for me even in softest mode it felt harsh, it seemed to lack compliance. It was one of the first M4's and I do believe they have since revised the suspension but I found it overly harsh and as such struggled to put the power down. But once it was gripping the acceleration with the M-DCT was more or less GTR like it felt, really impressive and it felt closer to 500HP than it did 400HP to be honest. I see yours is a GTS packed car, which I believe improves that no end, I've not driven one with the GTS pack.

Gibbo, the suspension in sports+ was terrible around town or on a bumpy road prior to the GTS pack, huge difference as a result of just this software. The Competition Pack suspension is better than the standard M4, but harsher - original M4 with GTS pack is kind of the compromise of both worlds it seems, I'm certainly happy with it! Forgot to mention (haters gonna hate this...) i've removed the secondary cats in the exhaust also, similar to the two pipe mod on the V8's - no drone, very quiet (except cold start) and sounds great when you go for it now. Happy :) But a car like this shouldn't need modified to make it look / go / perform as it should stock IMO.

Nice wrote up. Shame about the pics not working. That mpg difference is no small thing, the V8 is pretty horrific on fuel.

Cheers Si - don't get me wrong, I loved my V8, and I'm sure your loving yours too! Also, goddamit, when did photobucket stop letting you 3rd party share *sighs*.

What was BMW's excuse for the wheels? "Suck my ****, it's wear and tear"?

Not far from the truth of the matter. They've offered 'a deal' on them. But still more expensive than getting them done elsewhere...... /rolls eyes.

What is this GTS pack you speak of, I know they did the basic m4, the m4 competition package, and the m4 GTS? Wasn't aware there was ever a GTS package from the factory?

It's just the software from the GTS added to any M3/M4 - improves a number of things, the DCT box, the traction control settings, the launch control, the suspension and steering settings - overall it improves the car no end to be honest.

I can understand the GTS engine and gearbox/traction/stability control software making a difference but I always thought the M4 GTS has a race car style coilover setup with mechanical bump/rebound/height adjustment, rather than any 'in car' electronic damper adjustment?

So you can't make the normal M4 suspension anything like the GTS through software, the hardware is totally different.

yeah I agree, but I didn't say it was the same as the GTS? - I said it " improves a number of things" - i.e. just the software from the GTS improves the stock M4 - which it does, so much so that loads of people are doing this now, and I am genuinely surprised how much of a positive difference it makes that I wish I had done it in week 1, not 6 months down the line.

I get that the software will improve the car :) but can't see how it does anything to the suspension at all, if it's just upgrading to GTS software as you alluded to originally.

You suggested that GTS software has improved the suspension, I'm just wondering how given that the GTS suspension doesn't even have any software, it's a fixed rate mechanically adjustable coilover (as in, turn knobs or wield c spanners at it) on that car.

A pedantic point perhaps but worth considering further - who did your software coding, as they may well have tweaked the suspension settings (albeit, they simply cannot have updated the suspension to the GTS settings, for the reasons I explained earlier :)).

I'm assuming he means it changes the electronically adjustable suspension settings in the standard car to be more similar to the GTS, as far as is possible with the adjustable setup. Obviously won't be the same thing as a race derived coilover set, but if owners find it an improvement then surely it's a good thing.

In comfort I'd say it's not too different to the stock exhaust, perfectly quiet (whilst sounding decent), silent on a motorway cruise. Sport and Sport+ it's a fair bit louder with the added pops and bangs.

Only thing I'd say is that it's pretty loud on a cold startup. It keeps one tailpipe closed and you get a loud higher pitched tone from a single pipe for 20-30 seconds until you drive off or the car warms a bit. If you have sensitive neighbours it might be a bit annoying....for them :p

Worth it though, definitely!

This is essentially what I'm after. I think some of the other exhausts, e.g. BCS, are just too loud for what the car actually is. I do the occasional lengthy motorway trip so silent in eco/comfort is ideal really.

With regards to the loud startup, I don't really care as I live in an apartment :D
@Robi here's a terrible phone video of a cold start for you :p

Sounds fantastic. Thank you very much! The carbon tips suit alpine white so much.

Why would anyone be hating on removal of secondary cats? Car is still legal and the sound improves and you get a free HP boost. I don't understand why anyone would hate on that apart from jealous idiots who drive poo boxes.
If the GTS software improves the ride, I am guessing your car has electronic dampers and its changes the algorithm for said dampers?

E92 has same with people putting Competition Pack EDC software on the non-Comp pack EDC equipped cars. It also updates the MDM traction limit threshold.

EDC is very good. Comfort rides very well, Sport makes it feel like a crashy Honda :D

The E92 in fairness all rode really well, very compliant and the GTS/Competition upgrades all made a nice improvement, great considering free to do. GTS M-DCT software is great too!

But on the M4, the early ones with overly harsh in all settings, hopefully software updates can fix that.

It's a fantastic car and you'll thoroughly enjoy it - I hope it brings you luck and good fortune though as you might find it doesnt save you much at all. FWIW the cost per mile of my 530i was just 2p less than the cost per mile of the AUC F10 I replaced it with, inclusive of depreciation

For audio etc I replaced the whole head unit with an aftermarket 'OEM Style' nav unit.

Many thanks Fox, took her out for her maiden commute today and got a few comments at work to the tune of they're paying you too much. I think they're under some illusion that I paid significantly more for it than I actually did. I won't correct them on that illusion :D

Seems to be riding well. Smooth changes in the auto box, comfortable ride, no strange noises, everything appears to be working as it should. Someone has fitted angel eyes to it in a previous life, is it easy/worth it to revert back to it's standard xenons?

Regarding your 2p comment, was that including insurance costs? I'm paying £350.00 per year for my fully comp policy and I only paid £1,700.00 for the car itself. I fundamentally know bills are going to be coming my way but it's difficult for me to conceive that an F10 530d is - like for like - only 2p more expensive to run than an E39 530i. I imagine our circumstances with the ownership of this car are vastly different (FWIW I'm not doubting your figures in the slightest, only that there's basically no dep'n left in this car and my insurance is dirt cheap).
