BMW and M Power Owners

I'm looking to move mine on. But what car can do what the M5Comp can do??


What car can I fill up with enough stuff for a 5 week Euro road trip, With camera gear Clothes......The Wife's Shoes....Coolbox...

So I've been looking into Mclaren 570's then 600LT then 720s Spider.... Seems budget creep is real.
I've always wanted a 991 Turbo S, and thats probably the closest to the M5C with regards to being mental but can also carry a decent amount of Luggage. But I feel like I need a car with some occasion.
Maybe a Portofino Roma spider.... Nope.. Budget isn't that big...

What the BMW does well is feel smaller than the car is. By that I mean it’s a little bit more agile and sporty than one would expect for such a big car.


If you like the driving dynamics of the car, not just the V8, I think you’d be disappointed with an RS6.


In fact, you’d need to spend a fair bit more to get more car.



Only thing coming close is an M3 touring, or an Alpina B3. But that would be a side step.



Let the upgrade itch pass :P

Horsham developments pre remap rolling road. E92 M3 competition. Standard so pleased with that. Remap run next when I get car back. Decats and stage2 map with a Macht schnell intake to go on. Main benefit is the better flowing elbow.

@Simon was that done by Jez? Horsham Developments started out mapping 200Sx, he did my old s14a many moons ago, good to see he’s still going
Yeh he’s still there. Just up the road and they a friendly bunch. Mainly Nissans but he’s just setting up his F87 M2 for time attack again

Good stuff, will be interesting to see what they do with your car. Do you have any expectations or ball park figure?
 
Ah they just running the before after. Prob should have used them for remap too. Hoping 10% everywhere and a bit more noise. 450 would be nice
 

Yup! Got my local dealership to match Cotswold.

I ended up going for MPPSK because of the fact it is compatible with the warranty


Love the dual nature of it in comfort and sport.



Sounds better than before in both modes. Can actually hear the car when accelerating now, which also makes it easier to drive being a manual.
 
We're in the market for a new car and I am trying to gently guide my partner away from the overpriced SUVs and towards the mighty estate car. We currently have a Peugeot 3008 which is a decent sized SUV but once you go much larger than that you are into land barge territory which we don't want. I was looking at the Skoda Superb but the missus isn't a big far of the look of them and she does like the BMW estates. I do too but I understand that the badge tax on BMWs is real.

We're getting rid of the 3008 because its a diesel and like seemingly a lot of modern ones, its having issues with its adblue system. Its going to be the best part of £1200 to replace and the garage says that they are still a bit of a crapshoot even when you replace them. Could last 3 years, could last 5-10. Either way we are nervous about getting another diesel with adblue.

We do between 8-10,000 miles a year so with the current price difference between petrol and diesel I don't even know if diesel makes much sense from a cost to run point of view. We don't need any of the things diesels do particularly well either like towing.

So...the cars I am looking at are the 5 series estates around 2019/20 as that sits within our budget of £20k. Is there anything I need to know about this generation of 5 series. Looking mainly at the 520i but these seem quite rare compared to their diesel counterpart. Are there issues that pop up at certain mileage? Are they reliable? Is there an issue going for a higher mileage but higher spec model?

I have a '18 530d touring. As you have found I think you will struggle to find many petrol 5 series touring's, I'd be interested to hear a bit more why you wouldn't want to go down a diesel route? BMW diesel engines are some of the best, and I'm not aware of any 'wider' adblue system faults that have impacted BMW engines... the only known fault with the current gen BMW diesel engines are the ERG system which they are currently in the process of replacing under a recall notice.

In the middle of 2020 the 5 series was facelifted so I'd be careful about what year you are looking at, I'd assume you can't get a facelift for up to 20k? As with all BMW's the option list is long and so the game of a well spec'd example can be a bit tricky but I think the general consensus is adaptive LED and HK audio are must haves. I'd suggest test driving an m-sport vs non (SE), the firmer suspension/big wheels you get on the m-sport are probably not for everyone's taste if you're just gonna be wafting around on the motorway.

My main issue with the diesel is the fear of another adblue issue. The garages that we have spoken to seemed to think the general implementation of adblue has been pretty poor and has plenty of issues and its expensive to replace. We don't do a huge huge amount of miles either so petrol just seemed to make a bit more sense. Not completely against the idea of a diesel, just reticent to go down that route again.

AdBlue can be problematic but less so on BMW's - I've heard a lot of bad reports about it on Mercedes, for example.

Look for an approved used BMW and keep the warranty running, then you don't have to worry about it anyway. 5 Touring's have rear air suspension for example, which isn't cheap to sort.

£20k won't give you a lot of choice though unfortunately, Touring's command a premium. In 2019/20 they were starting to phase out the G30 5 Series before the LCI (facelift model), and LCI cars will be north of £25k.

Cant you get Adblue deleted?

You can, yes but there is a reason its there and it is fundamentally illegal to do this. On our current car it seems to be having a slew of intermittent issues as well so we have completely lost faith with it regardless. We do trips abroad in the car and have young children so we want something reliable.

My dad has a Cayenne diesel and has had an adblue leak. Needed the entire system replacing outside of warranty.



It is another thing to go wrong, and if you’re not doing the mileage I could see you being at higher risk of having issues.



Apologies if I missed it, but is a 3 series touring not big enough?
