BMW and M Power Owners

Mercedes don't do it in that order though. It's why the E Class is almost a tech generation behind the 5 (certainly the case with the F10 vs the W212). Merc go S, then C, then E.

Certainly not the case with the G30 and W213. The W213 is a step change compared with the W212. Guess Mercedes had to because the previous generations range wasn't all that at all.

Yep, but you can't get them anymore. I think we were one of the last build slots. It is a great car. Sadly, not comparable to the M5 in terms of where it should / could have been tech wise, but it more than fits my (our) needs at the moment.
You can pick up a lightly used one for ~£44k at the moment. I really want one, have heard they are they perfect blend of economy, power, comfort and performance.

They are very much that. Ours was brand new, lease with a lot of "extras" thrown in, but still a bit behind even the outgoing F10 by tech comparison. We're averaging 27mpg over our current 5k miles.

Congratulations, they are quite nice cars .
However, as Fox previously mentioned if you are ordering in the UK, it will be xdrive, thus a bit difficult on the doughnuts in the car park. :D

You need a battery tester thingy ideally - I used some contraption in the garage at work, I’d imagine most garages would test it for you for little if any fee.

If you can’t do this then I’d be inclined to take the battery off the car and charge it overnight - or replace it with a known good one that’s fully charged - if the voltage on the old battery was low then the problem will disappear.

I charged my battery overnight on my e38 when it started throwing transmission faults, I did suspect the battery as it only did it if the car had stood for a few days whilst I was away in the truck, the car behaved perfectly for a day or so then the trans fail message reappeared, new battery cured it completely.

So little update here Scania.

Since the fault occurred it's not happened since but there is some aggressive downshifts in auto mode when climbing a hill, I think the box is getting confused or something.

I checked the error code just now and it's showing P0369 which, from a quick Google, would suggest there's something wrong with the camshaft position sensor. So I guess I have two issues on my hands.

Quick question, would the light have to be on the dash for the gearbox emergency fault to show a specific code on my OBDII reader? I mean, there's nothing to show that there's a camshaft position sensor? Any chance these could be related?

That will probably be tricky.

They'll have to try and pull it out which is difficult and won't yield perfect results if they can't access behind the dent (maybe they can with the windscreen out). Try a few other dent places first.

I’m still minded to think the battery could be the culprit here - have you tested / changed it?

I say this as a bit of Googling has shown this...

There are a number of causes that could be behind your vehicle’s P0369 code. The most common reasons are:

  • A dead/weak battery
  • A faulty starter motor
  • A starting system circuit
  • Camshaft position sensor circuit poor electrical connection
  • A faulty camshaft position sensor
  • A camshaft position sensor harness that is shorted or open
  • A camshaft position sensor circuit that has a poor electrical connection

I’m assuming - only assuming - that yes a fault code would correspond with the dashboard warning light if it’s not illuminating then perhaps it’s not this....

Thanks for the (conflicting) advice guys! :D

Drive home was interesting, 12 mile commute but I kept it in manual mode the entire way home and as such, stopped the car shifting more than one gear at once. Due to this, no problems at all... no lights, no poor shifting, nada.

I'll take my reader down in the morning but will it read anything if the light isn't on?

Checked for leaks again and I can't see anything. How do I check the battery health?

Thanks again :)

I had a vaguely similar issue with my older E39. The petrol auto's have a position switch on the left side of the trans. It isn;t the best seal from factory and lets water in, causing limp home mode. If you whip it off the car, drill the rivets off, dry it out, apply some silicone sealant round the edge abd bolt back together it sorts the sporadic limp home. Mine used to go into limp home when moving through the box, did this and it solved it.

Good point, I recall reading about this when doing my many many hours of e38 research (same procedure for the e39)

Will get it checked today at lunch.

I've managed to get the car to go into limp mode and rescanned the error, now I'm getting P0735, which apparently means Gear 5 Incorrect ratio. This could mean any of the following:

  • Low transmission fluid level
  • Dirty transmission fluid
  • Shift solenoids
  • Transmission mechanical problems
  • Transmission hydraulic control circuit

Looks like it's going to be a cheap fix or rather expensive.

Just wondering if anyone has ever come across an email address for the BMW Sytner group? as I am finding it beyond impossible to find. I know they have an online form but that limits the user to 1000 characters.

Whilst I am on, can anyone shed any light on the service requirements of a '65 plate 320d Tourer, approx. 28000 miles, as this is what I require the email address for. As I had been told a price for my service by the call centre weeks ago when I booked it in, only to drop it off earlier to find it was literally 4.5 times as much. Needless to say I walked out. Seriously contemplating going to an indy but not sure if they can reset the requirements on the cars system.
