BMW and M Power Owners

If it wasn't referring to the "car life" then why isn't BMW including a transmission fluid change as part of their regular maintenance?
Or shoould we expect that a gearbox should only have an expected life of 62k miles?

On the same logic of "not dumping 260bhp on the tarmac" you're better off getting a G30 520d. I know NVH will never be the same, but surely the gap is becoming signficantly smaller today? Or if you're never pushing the car, might as well get a FWD, no?

They don't sell an FWD 5 Series, so you can't get one of those instead. Performance isn't the only reason one would opt for 6 cylinders over 4.

I know they don't, it was a not so subtle hint at Audi who tend to be better places to sit in if performance is not of interest.
I also understand that, hence I mentioned NVH. At the end of the day, everyone is free to buy the car they wish, and use it as they wish. But offering the 4wd versions on the high power versions is simply called... progress.

Probably more to do with torque limits and putting it through the xdrive system.

That’s why the G30 M5 uses the ZF torque converter box.
But a 911 turbo (with a lot more torque has a double clutch system and 4WD), i guess it makes their life much easier scaling down the M5 version. Is a torque converter auto quite slow compared to DCT?

Not if they are not offered!

Indeed, but unfortunately BMW also needs to make a profit. They are not offered simply because there isn't enough demand for them to worth the effort.
That's why we didn't have RHD M550D on the F10 and why we don't have RHD 540d on the G30. I was quite suprised to see that F10 530D are very closely priced to F10 535D. On the F30 the premium is huge between an equally specced 330D and 335D, 30-50% in most cases, there are highly desirable and hopefully we will see them in the UK.

That's why the Americans (of all people) got offered the F10 M5 in manual transmission, whereas it was never available in Europe. There were enough of them willing to buy it.

@theone8181 - depends on the torque converter gearbox. The recent ZF8HP gearboxes are pretty damn good, enough to make the overall package as good as double clutch transmission, without the additional pain of having to beef them up to take all the torque.

I'm sure BMW could have made the e90 335D in manual as well, but 330D were much better (and desirable) cars in the automatic version and that's why they didn't bother. And when launching the F30, both 330D and 335D were auto only, hardly anyone missed manual despite what the odd forum might say.

Thanks for the (conflicting) advice guys! :D

Drive home was interesting, 12 mile commute but I kept it in manual mode the entire way home and as such, stopped the car shifting more than one gear at once. Due to this, no problems at all... no lights, no poor shifting, nada.

I'll take my reader down in the morning but will it read anything if the light isn't on?

Checked for leaks again and I can't see anything. How do I check the battery health?

Thanks again :)
You need a battery tester thingy ideally - I used some contraption in the garage at work, I’d imagine most garages would test it for you for little if any fee.

If you can’t do this then I’d be inclined to take the battery off the car and charge it overnight - or replace it with a known good one that’s fully charged - if the voltage on the old battery was low then the problem will disappear.

I charged my battery overnight on my e38 when it started throwing transmission faults, I did suspect the battery as it only did it if the car had stood for a few days whilst I was away in the truck, the car behaved perfectly for a day or so then the trans fail message reappeared, new battery cured it completely.

They had manual transmission e60 M5’s also in the U.S. & Canada market due to “American market expectations” or something akin, pretty daft really because BMW fitted the awful clutch delay valve to it which ruined the change not to mention the SMG ‘box whilst not being BMW’s finest hour actually suited the V10 very well imo.

Irritatingly BMW do make an RHD RWD 540i, but they are all exported to Australia and New Zealand and over here we only get the stupid Xdrive version. Frustrating.

I got 16mpg commuting in a 540i pointlessly powering all 4 wheels :(

I understand where you are coming from but honestly not all 4wd systems are the same.
16mpg is woefully bad - probably a mixture of slow traffic and cold engine, but it would have been just as bad in a RWD 540i, 5-10% better mileage due to lack of xdrive is still shockingly poor mileage.

If you have a look here - real world consumption figures of 540 xdrive: https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/over...016&power_s=330&exactmodel=xdrive&powerunit=2
And here at averages of all 540i, including xdrive & RWD: https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/over...ar_s=2016&power_s=330&power_e=350&powerunit=2

The real world diference is absolutely insignificant. 5% better fuel efficiency on a new 5 series really shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

That and it was probably new so the engine isn't operating efficiently yet. I would be devastated if a 540i xDrive, underpowered compared to the S6, got worse MPG than the S6 (currently on 27mpg since new)

Depends on the journeys! MPG is crud on short journeys/around town. I averaged 24/25 over a year and a half in a 340i, stopped bothering recording it after then. :p Though I only do on average 20 miles a day, short journeys.
