This has been the case on every 1 series ever made?

Maybe the facelift will make it better like the previous gen. That was ugly until the facelift fixed the front and back.

I think 'truely grotesque' is an exaggeration. It's not great but what small hatch is?

had to check which is which ... but original is more attractive
- new guppy air dam, front light jog, meh - equally old wider boot opening, lozenge lights, and integrated plate were more attractive

The Ford Focus now looks more like a 1 series than the 1 series

I know, but that doesn't make it any better at all given tha M performance trim is typically the most desirable trim on non M cars in the UK because "M car bruv" so we'll end up seeing those most often.

No we won't, there are many many more regular M Sport models on the road that M Performance - if only because the engine range is greater on the M Sport.

M performance is just the trim isn't it or is it or is it its own model now. My comment was based on m sport model line, m performance i thought was just the optional extras anyone can buy and stick on or spec when buying new.

Either way, they both look crap, with crap sounding engines.

M Performance is cars like the M135i.

Not a full fat M car but get an M in the model designation. It's not the same as M Sport trim level.

Effectively BMWs answer to Audi's RS, S and S-Line denominations.

Interior looks good though.

I owned one! Nicer than this new one though which is just a generic small hatchback with some very bizarre design features

Agree to disagree. It had character, albeit ugliness being part of that character, whereas this one is just very generic looking. Interior is alright, but outside, it is properly grotesque. Only word I can find that accurately describes it.

BMW seems to have just lost the plot lately. 8 series, 7 series with the laughable grill, a bland and lifeless looking Z4 and now this.

I'm with you. I think they look absolutely horrendous! Mostly down to the massive snouts they're now giving them and what they need to do to the front ends to accommodate.

I don’t mind the looks on this, but I’m expected to go from expected to downgrade cylinders, capacity and BHP, trade off the fun of rear wheel drive and all for I imagine more money. Just for a bit more room in the back...when 95% of the time there’s just me sat in it. It hardly seems a winning concoction.
