BMW and M Power Owners

That's a pretty hefty discount!

The list prices are heavily inflated, so I’m not convinced they’re “real” discounts. Why do manufacturers have these silly list prices, only to “discount“ by 15/20% from new? Is it just a conjuring trick to lure people in (seems to work), or is there some real utility from an accounting/business PoV in doing it?

Thoughts on 3 series tourer v x3 please!

I thought I was decided on getting a 3 Series Tourer 320d/i msport (though the 330d sport is basically the same price... would that be a better shout? I don’t think I’d be adding any options)

Id prefer the saloon but not going to work with a dog - (can’t believe my choice of car is being determined by a golden retriever), but now I’m thinking about an X3 purely for the ride height.
Am I being daft? I’m currently driving a GLC which I think is skewing things. I understand the tourer is a newer refresh?

It’ll be brand new.

Get a tourer 3 series, when your dog is old and can't jump up into the boot of a x3 he/ she will thank you for your choice.

Always been a fan of the E46, and couldn't resist this mint 55' 330ci, 60k miles:

Been thinking of replacing my MG ZT and have recently been looking at 3 series tourings. Out of curiosity I turned my attention to the F10 5 series am quite surprised you can pick up 14 plate cars for around 10-11k (~100k ish miles)

Maybe 325/330i's command a price premium compared to a 520d, but I think I may actually consider one, especially when most of the 5's I've seen have a much better spec.

What am I missing? Is the F10 520d a reliability nightmare or something? I'd be looking for an auto M sport tourer. Widescreen nav seems to be the one to go for. Any other options I should consider?

There are lots of very poor spec ex fleet ones around which make up the bottom of the market. The 2 litre diesel is also fairly noisy, unrefined and suffers from a quite serious issue with the timing chains.

Buy a 6 cylinder. Its more reliable and it's a proper engine for a 5 Series.

Thanks Fox, I thought the chain issues were only a thing on the E90 2 litres.

LCI was late 2013 wasn't it? I guess there's no real reason to consider a pre-LCI car? Was the black out fascia standard on all LCI cars?

I've just found an old thread by Aruffell from a few years back so I'll give that a good read. I'm not looking to buy just yet, I'll get my ZT MOT'd in January and then look to replace it next year so plenty of time to do my research.

I was initially looking at nearly new Octavia VRS estates but the extra levels of kit and comfort you get in a 5 are very tempting. Maybe I'll up my budget a bit and aim for something a bit newer with lower miles.

LCI was 2010. If it helps.

Just checked. It was 2008 for the 2009 model.

Thanks guys, is surround view just a reversing camera or does it add anything else? I guess all cars come with rear PDC? Can you get front PDC as well?

You'd think given the issues with the E90, BMW would have revised the chain guides in time for fitting to the F10.

Sorry for the probably very obvious questions. Until yesterday I didn't think an F10 was in my budget so I don't know a great deal about them.

The 6cyl can also suffer with chain issues if serviced irregular. Very rare, but can occur.
What happened with the chains, you never heard of the old e46, e39 or e90 engines ever having problems with chains so it’s not like they didn’t know how to build them correctly.
The only issue with chains were the chain guides on an e39 m5 that I can think of.

What budget?

I think it would be a choice between, prices are pretty similar (albeit the X3 is £40 a month more than the 320i Tourer but still less than my overall budget:
Tourer
320i M Sport
320d MHT M Sport
X3
Or xDrive 20i xLine

There is the options of the Pro Pack and/or Tech Pack but I'm not 100% sure what these even give you, the BMW website is a bit ambiguous.
