BMW and M Power Owners

Just noticed today the launch of the 128ti, aiming square at the Golf GTI - be interesting to see if this gives VW a bit of a fright, as they been left to fill an ever shrinking market space with the GTI. The rest of the market has largely gone off chasing big power in the 300bhp+ hyper hatch market. Other than VWs own group Octavia vRS, the regular i30N and the 308GTI, the Golf GTI doesn't actually have much competition for people happy with the 250bhp FWD market rather than the 300bhp+ AWD market.

Focus st?

To you. And probably quite a lot of us here, too.

But we are far from the majority. Most people swapping a 320d for a Tesla company car do so because the bik is nil not because they really want to outrun a Ferrari 360. They'd have still ordered it if it was significantly slower.

And on the flip side, a lot of people buying genuinely fast cars do so for reasons not just related to straight-line speed, which is why they don't pick a Tesla.
I've no idea what co car owners have got to do with anything

People will look at the spec sheet and see the hilariously slow, expensive BMW and pass on it.

Put it this way if uncle albert went to the BMW dealership to buy a brand new 520i like he does every 6 years but the salesman was like instead you can have this 550i twin turbo for the same price, however it will use 2.5 times as much fuel, cost more to service etc etc. There is a plethora of reasons to stick to the 520i.

With EVs you lack the plethora of reasons to go for the slower one. They won't use more energy, they won't cost more to run, they won't have the additional complexities the further up the range you go. So why wouldn't you go for the faster car, it makes no sense not to. A v8 will use more energy all of the time, a fast EV will just use energy dependent on speed travelled.

The irony is for a time the higher performance ones actually had a much bigger range too:p.

And I think 25 hp is neither here nor there between focus and golf. There's also an a35.

Why do you think there are suddenly loads of Tesla around? The zero bik saves people hundreds of pounds a month.

You continue to exaggerate how much the average Joe gives a stuff about how fast a car is. The 520i example actually demonstrates my point, there exists a car that is just like the 520i only faster without costing any more to run. It's called the 530i and still people buy the 520i.

but the 530i uses more fuel.
The 530i costs more to service
The 530i presumably costs more in the first place?

People have reasons to go for the slower ones. Remove the advantages of the slower ones and they will pick the higher performance car.

2 more spark plugs yo! Bit more oil too.

Wait...no...That's not right.

Oh really its not a 6 cyl anymore?

We could even change it to 520d vs 550i or whichever is the most powerful in their range? I really don't know about the latest models in the BMW 5 range. however -
the more powerful it is the more it costs to run.

With an EV you can have an ultra powerful car that costs the same to run as the base model. Quite cool actually.

Nope. Basically the same engine as the 520i.

It hasn't been for 7 years. It is the same engine as the 520i but with a different state of tune. So same fuel efficiency, servicing costs etc yet still people pick the slow one. Why? Because many people are not interested in high performance.

Do they cost the same?
