BMW and M Power Owners

It is, it also doesn't have the awful Shadow Edition wheels either it has the nicer standard ones.

Just need to get rid of those stupid side skirt stickers and it's a nice example.

However it does appear to be £26,000 for a 2011-2019 shape 1 series and consequently I'd rather get the bus than hand over 26 grand and get one of those. Seriously, if that's what they cost then run away. They are great cars but 26k for a 3 year old one?! You have a choice as to whether you participate in the current silly used car market.

It just shows I know very little about car prices, but these are the prices they go for. I've seen 2017 models prices at 28k with a lesser spec. I'm trying to avoid Shadow Editions, but then they don't have all the extras I would like. :)

It is what they currently go for but that's because the used car market is currently a total mess. That car probably cost that brand new - now it's over 3 years old and is a superseded model. The M140 is a great car but be careful of spending too much on one because it's just not worth the money - it's an old design now (The 1 Series came out 10 years ago and looks it inside). Until the current used car madness you could buy a year old one for around £23k. I think it's cars like this which are most risk of a massive price correction when things calm down, there is no sane or rational reason why a 1 Series that cost £28k brand new should be £26k at 3 years old.

It was a £40k list price when new (I know the person shiuldnt have paid list) so its only 65% of new price. Not dire but not great.

Like you say though, people don't pay list for new cars. I would imaging that would have been 12%-18% off list for the original owner.

The M140i shadow edition started at £36k list price but nobody was paying that - they were easily available for the right side of £30k, especially towards the end of production. Even those who walked in to the local dealer without negotiation would find a generous deposit contribution on the finance offerings widely advertised which also seriously reduced the price.

A quick look back over some of the deals around when this car was new is showing they were starting at about £28950 after discount brand new.

There is no way to spin that £26k for a 3.5 year old F20 1 Series is anything other than highly amusing.

Nobody did as I'm fairly certain it wasn't available on the F20 :p

Seems it was available on everything except the M140i. The M140i only got cruise control with braking function which this model has but no idea what means. Sounds like adaptive in just another name?

I meant £40k with all the options this car had selected. But agreed, the person buying it shouldnt have paid anymore than £35k even if they were useless at negotiation.

We're talking about the M140i though :p

I don't really understand why it wasn't on the M140i though, usually when it wasn't available on a performance variant it was some trivial reason like steering wheel button space (Hello F10 M5).

Cruise Control with Brake Function is exactly what it says on the tin - it's cruise control but it applies the brakes to maintain the set speed as well as reducing engine power. So, if you go down a steep hill, it'll brake. It is not adaptive at all. It's the normal cruise offered on BMW models since about 2005ish.

The braking function just meant if you held down on the speed control toggle it would actively brake rather than coasting/engine braking to the new speed. It was easier to just use the actual brake pedal in my experience. There was no adaptive speed control as part of it.

Well seems like an odd omission that you could have adaptive cruise control on even a 118d but not the M140i. Like you say Fox, it was probably down to button space on the steering wheel.:p

Pretty sure the M140i has the same wheel as the rest of the range though, so it's strange. The F10 M5 had an M button or something in the way. I think I'd rather have had the adaptive cruise :D

They were on favourable finance deals but in part because the GFV was high. What you're seeing is now a high FV. So it is working to plan really?

2024 they reckon shortages will be over and done with so maybe some easing off on second hand prices in 2023. Question is, can you wait that long?

I don't think it will be that long*, surely there is a limit to this? I mean where are all the people who will hand over £26k for a 3, 4, 5, whatever year old 1 Series? Time is marching on and it isn't getting any newer...

*For the used car issue, not the new car issue.

The used car issue is commonly lumped in with the new car issue and whilst there is obviously a link when some people will turn to used cars because a new one isn't as easy to get as it was, I think the effect of this is over played. New cars are still available to order - you could order a brand new M135i right now and have it delivered in 4-5 months time. So, why would that translate specifically into people paying stupid money for old cars? I think there are a number of factors at play of which new car supply is just one. The other issues may well fade quicker.

Well BMW do strange things, The 125i M Sport could have it as an £700 option.

Its like they wont let UK buyers buy the cheaper panoramic sunroof on the X5 in the UK and if you want the B&W upgraded stereo you have to have the £2400 starlight roof. Makes no sense, even to the BMW dealers you talk to.

This isn't true, it also strong discount on list price. If you wanted to pay cash for one you could and you'd get a significant discount. They were available from £28950 after discount in early 2018, that's about 20% off list. From what I can see the GFV on the £28950 one was about £12500, very far from high! Shadow had a better GFV for sure but still miles from where we are now and still independent of the on the road price which is what we're focusing on here.

List price discounts on BMW have typically been very high.

I agree and very difficult to estimate but the fact is the number of new cars coming to market in 2022 is still going to be vastly reduced and also missing options. That means fewer people are getting rid of their 3 year old cars and keeping them so fewer decent used cars coming to market.

Plus although you can order new cars, the prices have jumped a lot and new car discounts are only a fraction of what they used to be. I know the Merc GLE I ordered back in May is now £4k more list price (5.5%) and is missing around £3k of options that the older cars got as standard so effectively a 10% price increase.
