BMW and M Power Owners

Does the N57 even have a dipstick in the F10? I've just been keeping an eye on the electric dipstick.

Officially no and there is no section in the manual on checking the oil using the engine bay. The way to check oil is through iDrive.

However if you look down the side of the engine you will find it DOES have a dipstick, but it's hidden out of view a bit and the pull ring is black not orange/red in the earlier models.

Hmm l. Think i will check local garages then. Did u go with bmw?

I suppose buying the Sachs shock absorbers for £100 for both and fitting them yourself is out of the question? There are quite a few good DIY's for this and it is very similar to the E46 rear shock absorber change which I can now do in around 20 minutes each side (most of the time is taken jacking the car up and removing the bit of interior trim).

Seriously though, it's a very simple job.

They've been the least of my worries!

I've done nothing- the clutch going pop and the water pump have been the priority :\. I'll be getting a quote for the diagnosis (probably that CCV thing?) And then see how many months of oil that is the equivalent of. What sort of oil consumption would a healthy 330ci get if most of its driving was around town?

I'll compare what level I got at the reasonably flat garage tonight with what the not very flat parking space ground tomorrow.

Mine, on 122k miles doesn't use a whole bunch at all (touch wood). I'm using 5w40 fully synth oil which may be helping as it's a bit thicker at temperature.

A good service and a genuine BMW oil filter can also help.

I can't figure out my M54 engined 325i (e46), some months it uses around a litre in roughly 1000 miles, yet I checked it yesterday after just shy of 900miles since the last check and it's not used any that I can see.

This seems to be a repeating pattern, I don't generally check it at home as its parked on a slope but check it at work where the car park is level.

Weird!

Im the type of person who would rather pay someone else to do it :)

My uncle owns a garage so it will go to him.

How do i find out the exact parts i need? E92 330i se.

Should i buy uprated?, will it matter if they are different make to the front?

Thx.

You do not want to be fitting uprated shocks to just one end of a car. It could make the handling unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

New day new problem!

Started the car up and got on with deicing and noticed it was running very 'lumpily' and the engine light was on. I press the throttle and the misfiring didn't die out at higher (2.5k) revs. I assumed the misfire / coil problem I had had got worse and needed to be looked at pronto.

Called the garage (got them on speed dial now) and they advised bring it in so we can diagnose.

Turned engine off and on again and it was back to normal with no light on now that it had warmed up. Took it in anyway. They confirmed it was cylinder 5 misfiring and replaced the coil there and then for £85. It now runs smoother than ever.

Cool story, eh?

Went to get my winter tyres fitted today, had a panic when I realised my car had mismatched tyres, with 225/50 at the front and 225/55 at the rear  Fortunately had bought the proper size winters so all sorted now.

Surprised the TC hadn't had a fit about it, might explain why it was so easy to get the back end out of shape in the wet.

Your tales do not make great advocates of people interested in buying a 330Ci!
