BMW and M Power Owners

What is people's opinion of the 123d. These are on my radar atm. I have always had a preference for petrol but my work now takes me well over 15k miles and in a small hot hatch this is proving a bit tiresome.

Or am I better looking at 3 series?

I would personally be looking at the 3 series, but that's my dislike of the 1 series to be honest.

I believe you get the same engine on some of the D3 Alpinas though. Meant to be quite a nice engine by most accounts.

From what I remember, the 123d was never particularly economical. I think ~40MPG on a run would be about the best you could hope for. Doesn't seem very good to me since my old M135i could get about 38.

123d could easily manage 50mpg...

38 is impressive from a turbo 3l s6 :)
What speed was that doing?

I suppose I've seen 45mpg from a 3.4l flat six... but only at 54mph on flat ground

Oops. Must've had the wrong info about the 123d. Could've sworn that I saw guys on babybmw.net getting lower figures than that.

I could get 38MPG in the M135i at ~70MPH. A friend of mine drove back to London from Birmingham on Friday in his M135i, and he sent me a photo of the onboard computer showing 44.9MPG with cruise control was set to 70MPH. It's a staggeringly good engine.

That's an awesome economy figure from an awesome engine :D :D :D

Didn't disbelieve you, just curious... as the next planned purchase is a M235i (or M2 when it's announced). I'm hoping it's before the end of the year as I'll have a contract bonus coming up which will pay for the 10% deposit.

The 123d is a more efficient engine than my 320d and I manage 50mpg average without driving like a granny. 45mpg when I'm doing more town and pegging the throttle and up to 55mpg when I drive really gently and keept to 65-70 on the motorway (unusual). I have tried and I haven't managed to get under 500 miles from a tank, I average 600 and have managed to eek out 700 on long motorway runs (ie UK->Switz) while keeping it between 70-75.

I've driven a 123d and easily managed to exceed my own economy.

It's possible that there's the odd problem or these people are putting their foot on the floor more often than even your usual spirited driver might do.

That said... I managed worse economy in a 318d than my 320d without doing much more than 80-90mph on German motorways.

I've managed north of 44mpg in the M135i, really amazing engine. My normal work trips average 38-40mpg depending on where I'm going. Overall average since day 1 over 15k miles is 34mpg, and that includes a track day and a day at the Ring!

Thanks for some of the info. :)
I will take a look at some 3 series as well and test drive both. I just get a little more lost in the 3 series market. Then next thing I know I am looking at 335i :D

Basically my budget is up to around 15kmax ideally 12-13k so 123d became an option. I prefer the coupe styling.

I don't think flat ground and sticking to 54MPH counts as a valid economy figure crinkleshoes :p

600 miles over the weekend, average 26MPG with 3 passengers and boot full of luggage. That's cruising at 80 GPS with the numerous squirts here and there to add some excitement to an otherwise boring trek up and down the motorways and A roads.

On another note, gotta say those PFC Z-Rated pads have been amazing. Brake dust is so low that I haven't felt the need to clean the wheels since washing them last Thursday.

You'd need to do more in depth research but IIRC the 123d has diff / gearing ratios which made it slightly more uneconomical than expected but I guess this might be a tradeoff for power maybe?

The problem with the 123d is that it isn't a particularly refined place in which to do 15k+ miles, which rather makes its economy benefits moot.

Cooper Reading phoned me last week and asked if I am interested in putting a refundable £1000 deposit down on the M2, and when it's announced I can either spec the car and be one of the first in the queue at their dealership or get my money back.
I would be half tempted if it was a special/limited edition but politely declined. I have a feeling it's going to be a fantastic car; everything the M4/M3 is and more.

This is more in-line with my worries, but also where I fall out of knowledge on the 3 series etc.

The 1 series interior does not excite me overall.
The 3 series maybe I have read this forum too much but I get bad vibes... unless you get the latest.

I am not expecting miracles but I find myself going round in circles far to often. The one good thing is I am not in a rush, and aim to enjoy looking & test driving. :p
