They were cheaper than the OEM shocks. Less than £300 delivered for all 4.

B4 is pretty low end for an M3 isn't it? I remember E36 came with B6 stock.

No they didn't come with B6's, and B6's on an E46 are a pain to fit due to the shorter length IIRC. B4's are OEM spec.

EDIT - B6's have adjustable damping.

You should. I certainly would like to, but I still think I'd be more satisfied with a 30d or 35d engine for my daily commute.
