You can pick early examples of these up now for between 24-28k, but how much more depreciation do you think there is left?
I was wondering if it will go the same way as the E46. Early examples can be had for 10k now. Or do you think that the success of the E46 will keep the prices of the E92 relatively stable for now? What are the chances of seeing them dip to sub 20k in the near future?

I would say that they will follow E46 trends.

There is nothing particularly special about them, I guess the GTS will be different as is the CSL, but there is plenty of supply with the standard models.

Hmm, the e92 has another couple of years of production iirc, so prices might hold for a bit. I'd imagine they will depreciate as quickly, if not quicker than the e46 given their thirst for petrol/heavy road tax.

For reference, I remember seeing a 2001 high mileage (80k) e46 M3 for £17,500 in October 2006 - I.e. just after production of the e46 M3 had ceased.

I am in agreement with NickXX, in that I think that they will depreciate potentially even heavier than the E46 did due to maintenance, thirst, VED costs. We can see the effects of this by the way of the E60 M5, the depreciation if anything has been even quicker than its predecessor to the point where early examples now change hands for as little as £15k already.

I hope they continue to depreciated *rubs hands together*. I wonder what the running costs would be like compared with my Z4M.... probably about the same, possibly more on the tax but I can't see servicing being much worse or tyres?

I would be slightly concerned if the £425 road tax would put off a potential M3 buyer.

I wouldn't say I'm concerned if that is what you are implying, just curious! Wouldn't put me off as I pay roughly that already for mine :) I was more or less thinking whether an E92 M3 would cost *much* more to run or fairly similar?

Road tax never really used to be an issue, but I think it's rising to the point now that, if you drive very few miles, it's beginning to represent more than a marginal cost. It's going to be £460 very soon, so for a 3 year ownership period that's £1,380. If you're driving 5000 miles per year that's probably more than you'd spend on servicing or tyres!

I'd tend to agree. However, I don't give a poo :D Only ever bought cars for the enjoyment I get out of them rather than thinking about what happens when I don't want them anymore.

You can't go wrong with an E92 M3. The other day after giving Gibbo a demo his words were something like "This is so much faster, sexier and more superb than my new banana car"....... ish ;)

Fuel costs are a quite a bit more in comparison. I was speaking to a guy who had an e46 M3 and e92 M3 who did 40,000 miles a year commuting in them.

He got 28mpg average in the e46, then 22mpg average in the e92. Ended up getting rid of the e92 and getting an X6 35d.

Not too bad really for me. I do a round journey of 24miles a day @20-22mpg backroads and dual carriageways, plus a hoon every weekend. So I usually spend £65 a week and 120-150 miles a week tops.....very much a routine and borrow company cars for distance journeys.

I completely agree, I've always winced at the thought of paying £400+ a year for tax when I only do 3000-4000 a year.

Some people call it cheap and that you shouldn't be worrying about it if you're spending X on a car but it's a regular high cost that you just don't need.

I think I will wait then. I was considering buying one of these around May, but given that the depreciation might go even further I will hold off. If I was going to keep it for years then I wouldnt have a problem, but I tend to keep my cars for a couple of years at the most. I do love them though

the options specified by owners of these seem to vary wildly

how easy is it to retrfofit stuff like the 6FL USB Audio Interface, DAB Radio Unit and TV ?

and whats this "commsbox retrofit" i hear about on e90 post ? is that BMW connected drive for people who have retrofitted professional nav ?

I have an E92 M3 with DAB and i can honestly say its RUBBISH. The signal drops out all the time which means you get 'no signal' while it decides if it has a solid signal. Unlike FM of course where it might crackle slightly.

The 400+ car tax is a pain, but if you earn the kind of money to finance a car that costs over 50 grand new, then this is just the price you pay.

Cheap examples, as i've found, are a false economy. The moment you need to start replacing brake pads, discs, tyres and all that malarky you might as well have bought a solid example from a dealer with a warranty, or a good quality private one.

Maybe when the car is 6-7 years old in 3-4 years time can i see them starting to change hands for 15k as the old E46 did when i had one of those.

Best car i've ever had, and better than a vanilla 911 easily. That engine is worth the ticket price alone. And 150 miles to a full tank at the moment with my heavy right foot - but oh what a buzz!

6FL is a massive pain to retrofit.

The new Idrive and hdd nav and the combox are even worse - $4k or so!

Everything is mostly easy to plug in but the major issue is the coding.

Maybe your car is broken? DAB in the M5 is absolutely fine - the only annoying thing is the top of the hour bug when listening to Radio 2 but it only seems to do it occasionally.

A mate has just swapped his fully loaded Alpine White M3 Edition for a black convertible M3 for the summer.

I will try to find out how much BMW gave him for the Alpine, it was brand new only 9 months ago from them - although he scored a very hefty discount, so might not be too badly off!
