8 series, awesome. Still remember wussing out on buying an 850 6-speed - but the starship mileage (think it was 220,000) stopped me from doing so.......Probably a wise decision at the end of the day :D

You probably made a wise choice :D

You need the wealth of a small nation to keep these things going but very enjoyable to use all the same. The gearing on them is quite bizzare but for a lump of almost two tonnes and a relatively low powered V8 by today's standards, the thing can shift.

1) Fox pointed out that SMG1 boxes are unreliable
2) You pointed out that the issues surrounding the SMG1 box were down to americans driving them like auto's
3) I then said that if they are unreliable in automatic mode, i cannot see the point (other than in your scenario)

Where do we have our wires crossed?

Just because Fox says something does not make it gospel truth :D

It's not unreliable when used in auto mode in the 330 either though!?

Don't want to step in to an argument here but I always thought the SMG box in the 330 was not true SMG, but actually SSG i.e. it uses a torque converter rather than dual clutch? Not 100% sure on that though.

Most SMGII users I know don't use the auto-mode at all. S3 from the off then up to S5 when warmed.

Nope no torque converter. It's a fully mechanical manual gearbox with a clutch, and the clutch is engaged by electronics and hydraulics.

It is a different system to the SMG2 in the M3, but is completely clutch based. It even double de clutches etc...

I think we have our wires crossed, do you mean that the american comment was the americans being annoyed at the style in which they drove, or annoyed at the lack of reliability?

So the upshot of all of this is that they are reliable? :)

Lol, yeah!

First option - Americans getting annoyed at the stylke at which they have to drive them, because most Americans do not know how to drive a "stick shift", as they call em, so they drive SMG cars as though they were driving a tip auto

Gotcha :) Always been quite attracted to the SMG 330's myself, seem like rare beasts though in comparison to normal auto models.
