So, during my time in a shared house during uni I played a lot of board/card games. Do anyone like these too and perhaps have some recommendations?

Games I've played and liked:

  • Warhammer: Chaos in the Old World
A complex but good game which has a fixed length so it doesn't go on for ages, yet has very intricate strategies.
  • Flux + Expansions
Simple, often anti climactic and always good if you intend to have a quick game (intentions are always fulfilled)
  • Killer Bunnies + expansions. Really enjoyed this game but a few too many expansions killed the fun for me.
  • Chrononaughts
From the makers of flux. Similar gameplay as flux but different concepts. Good game for similar reasons.

Risk, took us three days to complete the game, resulting in two people missing work and the other of us missing lectures and seminars. Epic board game.

Carcassonne is a great game, best played with 2-3 players but can be played upto 5 I think.

Metro is a good little game too and can be had for £20 - again probably be best with 2-3 players but up to 6 can play.

I just recently bought Battles of Westeros which is based in George R Martins world of a song of ice and fire. Seriously epic based on battlelore board game. It is only played with 2 players but will set you back a fair bit. £60

I'm not really fussed for flux. Good light hearted game but I just prefer board games. :p

www.boardgamegeek.com is awesome... :p

Risk has always been a great laugh after dinner and nothing beats a game of Backgammon on a big board. Scrabble still gets played at home and on our travels. As to cards, Bridge takes an awful lot of beating and is another great game to settle down to after a good meal. THe only problem with all of these is finding time to play them.

  • Warhammer isn't a board game, it's a RPG with figurines

Hotel - excellent board game :)

Last Night on Earth is an excellent board game for 2-6 players. It's a zombies vs. survivors game, several scenarios with a modular board so the 'map' is always different to the last. It uses a combination of miniatures and playing cards, and has several expansion packs which add new zombie types, heroes, scenarios, playing cards, etc.

Really can't recommend it enough if you enjoy zombie 'stuff' and want a fun boardgame to play with some friends, games can be as short as 1 hour or up to 4 or so. The rules are 'modular' meaning you can play with the basic rules or include several of the extra rules to make for a longer and more interesting game. They are also given weighting, so you can make the game equal for both the zombies and the survivors (or equally slant it in the zombies' favour if you so wish). For example to give the zombie player 'Grave Weapons' (the ability for them to swing an axe, machete, or be wrapped in barbed wire) may cost X points. To balance this out, you may give the survivors the ability to build barricades, costing X points and so on.

The game is well made, the board and cards are printed on thick card and the artwork is excellent. The game itself is a tongue-in-cheek take on popular zombie films, with a splash of Left 4 Dead action rolled up into a boardgame.
