Board Games

scrabble
chess
monopoly
trivial pursuit

anything is is just passée

I did go to a Gamesworkshop when i was 13 and play a 6ft long Space hulk. It was quite mental and got me into wasting a years pocket money on paint and metal models. (clever marketing by those long haired heavy metal freaks)

Kerplunk was brilliant, Hungry Hippos more so.

...I suppose Scrabble and Monopoly are good, I hate Cluedo.

Guess Who is pretty good. :D

Burnsy has mentioned card games too, so I'll throw in "Cribbage" and "New Market". For Cribbage, you can buy a purpose-built scoreboard that uses metal pegs but it's fine to use pen and paper too. New Market is a gambling game that uses multiple decks.. just bet in pennies or matchsticks and it's still fun.

For board games - a few people have said it already, Monopoly.

Although not really a board game, I'll throw in Jenga, and it's highly sociable. It is a set of 60 wooden brick-shaped blocks which you construct into a tower. Each brick is about the size of a chime bar, about 2" x 2" x 6". To play the game, you remove one of the existing bricks from the construction and place it on the summit. Last time I played it there were 12 of us. We played in round robin and the more we play it, the higher the tower gets. Eventually, it gets so fragile that one person will knock it over and loses.

If you can find a copy (it's been out of print for some time) the Civilization boardgame is awesome - it sells for a lot... I'll also echo Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne and Munchkin. Last year's Spiel des Jahres Dominion and it's expansions are FANTASTIC.

Take a lookg through www.boardgamegeek.com - Anything within the top 500 is worth playing :D

Wondering if the all seeing all knowing members of overclockers can help me remember a board game from about 15-20 years ago.

It was very similar to X-Com only it was a board game and I am sure you put walls and doors on it. Sure it was aliens vs space marines. Google is not helping and it certainly doesnt help that I can only half remember the game.

Go. It has only one type of piece and its rules are so simple that they can be learned in a couple of minutes and yet it the depth of the strategy that arises from them can take decades to understand properly.

It sounds very much like Space Hulk. An anniversary edition was released 18 months ago-ish.

On the subject of Trivial Pursuit, a friend of mine was playing with his wife, among others. She got the question "True or false - no woman has ever ridden a Grand National winner" to which she asked "Are we assuming they mean the horse?".

was going to mention "go" really good game, always struggled finding people to play against though :D
