I've not kept up to date on this since it first happened, I'm presuming the idiots involved didn't intend to take down a passenger jet and misidentified it as a military plane or something... or am i being naive and it's actually more sinister than that?

I'd imagine mistaken identity due to the inexperienced missile operators, BC has released a report, this was released a little time ahead of the official investigation press conference but seems to name some of the same people:
