Boring practicality question for Octy VRS owners

Ok so had a look and test drive of a vrs finally today. It was yellow, and the more I looked at it the more I hated the colour but atleast I've had a drive now. More on that in a bit.

Anyway, as I was having a look I noticed the black bars behind the rear seat, I assume to help stiffen things up. Problem is I sometimes need a flat load area so can these be removed? I meant to have a closer look today but forgot :o

As for the car itself, well.... it wasn't as quick as I was expecting :o It was a city centre dealer so I didn't get out of a 40 limit during my 15 to 20 min test. I did give it some second gear, foot to the floor stabs, obviously I couldn't take it all the way through the revs other wise I'd have been a bad amount over the limit rather than just slightly :o More- nicely brisk rather than quick, maybe I was expecting too much or maybe it needs to be kept on song more than I thought. Whatever the case I was quite impressed but not blown away.

It was well screwed together but a little bland inside. Hate the seats just as much in the flesh. The light colour carpets are a joke. Climate control was a little fiddly on the move but I' probably get used to that. Also I was suprised it lacked the info display in the middle of the dash that displayed your mpg etc. that was on the L&K.

I was impressed with the ride though. It didn't feel any harsher than the L&K I took out despite the 17's and firmer suspension.

Hopefully this is just a problem with yellow ones but I booted it in second and the next thing I know I had Kevin in his Astra coupe up my arse and trying to intice me as it went to 2 lanes. Not what I want on the roads, maybe a black or silver one would help me blend into the background a bit more.

So theres my first impressions, any avice on those bars would be appreciated.

Wasn't one of those things that allows you to fix a child seat in was it?

Well I'm a current owner, so any questions feel free too ask, but no idea on the bars mind.

Oh and there brisk at best in standard form, it's the fact there so tunable that makes them great.

Mine 240bhp, with some added suspension mods too boot.

If you had a budget of around £8500 I'd have taken you for a drive :p

Yup, and according to the briskoda boys in the link randell provided they can't be removed :(

After thought style suspension setups for the lose :p
 
Blimey, I was considering one of those when the 850R went. I couldn't live with those struts at all.

Yeah I'm after a mk1, don't think my 6 grand will stretch to a mk2 :D

emailiscrap- I can see them being one of those things that won't be an issue 95% of the time but when you do need to load something in there your going to be cursing them and having bad thoughts about attacking them with a hacksaw :p at the very least I'd have to make myself some foam covers for when I load my bike in there :o
 
I'm on my 2nd vRS and I've transported many o' large items in the boot. Yes, the braces are a pain, but you can rest whatever is large easily upon it, and anything that is smaller underneath the large item(s). If you regularly need to transport large items, I suggest you go for a Transit ;)

I saw a sporty-looking new Transit in Wycombe the other week. Had stripes running up the bonnet and some nice wheels. Sounds completely crap but it looked surprisingly cool...for a Transit.

I'm sure I could work around it in most cases. Just seems a shame that they had to resort to such a crude solution. I guess raiding the VW parts bin can only get you so far ;)
 
Definitely not quick as standard, however a remap will get it to something worthwhile. The seats I like as theyre pretty distinctive and the carpet doesnt need that much cleaning unless you take it off-road every day! The car does have a fuel computer you just need to flick through the options on the stalk.

The bars are only bolted in and Im sure could be removed for a short space of time, the car is unlikely to crumple apart!

Ah ok, thats interesting. As I say after my test drive I was going to investigate further but... well... I forgot :o

I won't exactly be loading up the suspension much around the twisties if I've got enough stuff in there to warrent taking them out so it shouldn't be a problem :D

Edit- I assume the trip computer comes up in the clock display? I wonder why the L&K had the nicer Audi esq. red led display in the centre of the dash? Maybe it was just an addition for that model. Not a huge issue anyway :)
 
It does, aye. Unsure why, perhaps as its more 'sports' orientated rather than luxury as the L&K. The green clocks look nice at night however, nice and bright.
