Bottom bit of desktop and applications hidden under taskbar

On my laptop the bottom bit of my desktop and the bottom of open applications is hidden under my taskbar

I leave the taskbar there all the time and have never had this issue before

I am bracing myself for an obscenely simple answer and to be made to look a total prat

the taskbar stays up, auto hide is not on

if I use auto hide you can see the bottom of the apps, they go right to the bottom of the screen instead of stopping at the task bar
 
I get this sometimes. Right-clicking the taskbar and un-ticking "lock the taskbar" and the re-ticking it seems to fix it.
 
It's probably due to you manually resizing the app window at some point. If you hit the maximize button does it soldv the problem?
If so simply drag the top bit of the app of the screen, the resize the window slightly smaller.

What's weird is that the scroll bar arrow at the borrom right is above the task bar, so the app obviously knows where the taskbar is.

Sorry that doesn't help.

Does it reset if you untick 'Lock the Taskbar', then resize the task bar (say two taskbar buttons thick), lock it, then undo it all again?

Does it stick after a reboot?

oh ,hadn't noticed that , very odd

it may well clear with a reboot but as it has done this on several occasions I want to hold off from that to see if I can find the cause :)
 
actually re the scroll bar, just went on IE and the bottom arrow of the scroll bar is under the taskbar :confused:
 
Do applications that snap to borders such as winamp snap to the taskbar? That should clear things up as to whether it's windows at fault.

:Edit: The reason excel seemed to know where the taskbar was is due to the fact that it has a small bar at the bottom if I recall, so it's merely coincidence that it happens to be the same size as your task bar.
 
Try resizing the taskbar up and down a few times to see whether the application starts to comply, or try moving the taskbar to another screen edge to see what happens.
 
try this

move the toolbar to left side of screen, then put it back to normal (when programs are closed)

now right click the toolbar, 'lock the toolbar', open excel, and maximize it..




and also, right click the toolbar, properties, 'keep taskbar ontop of other apps' untick it, click, ok, go in again, re-tick it, click ok..
