/edit!!! I've just looked at the brewery page for Thrappledouser and the description says it's a Scottish word: " Ever wondered where we got the name Thrappledouser from? It was very simple really. We took the Scots’ word for throat and wove it with a term for slaking or dousing your thirst. I suppose a straight translation into English would be thirst quencher.". The dictionary link above also confirms that it's a Scottish word. Our rules say no foreign languages so technically, it should be a zero pointer! Your original decision was correct.

The thing is, the rules don't say 'no foreign words', or 'only English words', which is why I was disappointed whoever entered the French word 'noir' in round C got zero points. If the French word 'noir' wasn't accepted, the Scottish word 'thrapple' also shouldn't be accepted. You can't have one rule for one guy and another rule for someone else.

But really, if mid-competition we agree to change the rules, then the rules on page one should be updated:

  • Non-English words are allowed/not allowed
  • Slang words are allowed/not allowed
  • Names deemed breaching forum rules because of explicit nature are allowed/not allowed.

That way everyone is clear, and can stop complaining to DirtyJester when he has a hard enough time running the comp, and is doing a formidable job.:)

My 2p

Ahleckz - slang, but I'd award the points. I understand that it is against the forum rules but it looks like he made an effort to get around that (unless DJ did the editing)
Feek - I wouldn't award points. Faced is an adjective or a verb, not a noun. If there was a beer named with 'necked' in it I wouldn't award either
Kuros - agree that beard is not a body part
Maccy - tea is not a body party, no
Sonea_Fifer - I wouldn't award points for this. It is a foreign word. Being in the Collins English is irrelevant - for example 'noir' is also in the same dictionary

Maybe we should just go straight to a vote to spare DJ any more significant work, as he's already got his plate full running the competition without managing our bickering :)

EDIT - I should also declare a conflicted interest - my x-rated entry is slang, using words acceptable to the forum - innuendo essentially. That was the way I chose to get around offending the forum profanity filter!

The shops I went in only had Tangle Foot or Bishops Finger... clearly made the correct choice :D

I agree with all of DJ's decisions on this one.

I agree with awarding points for Thrapple following the explanation. It may derive from a different language but you could say that about any of the English words entered. It's an English word just as much as all of the other English words that come from Latin.

If you posted the two beers with swearies in La Cuisine, the post would get deleted as it violates forum rules. Only for X Rated was it stated that we can violate this rule, with DJ doing the editing to cover any bad word/reference up.

Put it to a vote I guess as I don't think it'll get sorted out any other way. I think DJ was spot on but he is always happy to be pointed out and put it to the people to decide.

DJ's selections seem fine to me, I was unsure of something this week so I posted this in the main thread, and it was cleared up quickly by DJ.

That feedback / service, is available to everyone, so if you are unsure, you can just ask.

I know I have a few more questions for future rounds.

I will be posting a break down on the nil pointers again later, we (as players) will have our say on each of them. Unless we once again have clear majorities, it will go to a public GD poll.

I can't be fairer than that.

Just to throw a spanner into the works, going by the reason Feek got nil points, then a few of the 5 pointers shouldn't have been allowed as well. :p
