Bought a Project

I quite like it but I'd gut the thing and pimp it out. Deep-buttoned crushed red velvet upholstery with tassles and lots of red gorilla fur round the windows. In the middle would be a heart shaped bed and a mini bar. And a couple of porthole windows near the back.

haha i would if it was any old van, but its a carlight, so keeping it original is important.

The plan was origionally, i keep the 740 turbo and my dad has my estate but i sold the turbo and kept the estate.

My dad had a volvo 850 for a few months till it basically broke an engine mount and gearbox seal, so we sold it for spares, but that thing still went like the wind :eek: 2.5 auto. Stick it in sport and it was really good fun :D 5 cylinder too.
 
Could be fun then? Last RWD Volvo I owned had cart springs for rear suspension though. Still it was surprisingly good upto a limit, I remember some 5 series hassling me on the straights and dropping right back when the old volvo would happily do 60 through tight s bends

My estate can be quite fun when provoked in this sort of weather. although for a drift car or something like that, it would need a better engine in.

Coming back from a breakdown friday morning i actually had a Vulva estate complete with twin axle caravan try and overtake me on the inside of a 2 lane roundabout...hehe, i could have jumped out and run faster...

P.S. Loving the old 'van but you really need an early 70's 240 to tow it with.

Bad News :(
We took it down the local caravan place today, who is very good. I know a few people that use him, so he wasn't trying to fob me off.

The caravan needs the front and rear stripped fix some problems etc.

Ive been quoted £5,500 - £6,000 to fix!!

so it looks like my caravaning days have come to an end before they got started

Luckily i only paid £400 for the van, and i should be able to get some of that back (even if i have to break for parts)

But ive been told carlight buy back old vans, restore them and then re-sell them so i'll have to contact them next week and see whats what.

It is a real shame, because they are a rare breed, and the one i have, is one of the slightly bigger ones. i REALLY dont want to part with it. I may well take it elsewhere for a second opinion but i fear the news will just be as bad.

A few mates have said "can you not do the work yourself?"

Well i guess you could if you knew where to start, but unfortunatly i dont.

Another few problems are:

- I spent most time working (inc weekends)

- My dad is a long distance trucker, so hes hardly ever around to help either!

Its not looking good, but i'm pretty determined to try and do something with it even though i dont have the first idea where to start.

At the end of the day, i paid £400 for it, so if i try and strip some of it myself, and screw it up, then ive only lost £400 - (which ive already saved back up anyway).
 
Is it the inner or outter skins need repairs? If its inners then take the inside out and DIY - the inside is only shaped plywood and the outside is thingy, strands/plastic/hardner FIBREGLASS! and aluminium strips.

As long as you keep it water tight while you work on it will be fine.

A neighbor of the in-laws is the Caravan Club Chairman and is also restoring a Carlight...its a long term one for him as well.

If you do sell, sell through the Caravan Club as you'l get better $$$ there.

probably the reason why you turned out to be such a problem child ;)

is buying another carlight not an option for you?
(must confess i'd never heard the name "Carlight" until you started this thread).

I would buy another, but they are rare. Theres non on auto trader nationally, and only 1 on ebay which is the 80's type and doesnt look as nice. and the starting price on that one is >£1k

So yes i would buy another, its finding one thats the problem!

lol i didnt get his name unfortunatly.

but after a quick chat with my folks, and confirming that the kitchen neeeds to come out due to rot, and the front sorted due to damp, we have decieded to try and fix it!

Plans are already in place to relocate my dads shed in the garden to make more room to store my van in a safer out of the way place.

Christ knows where the hell we start all this, but my dads off for 10 days at xmas, and i may well take a week or 2 off in Jan/Feb to try and sort a few things, but for the remainder of the week, its going to stay on the driveway, possibly with the caravan cover on it for now.

The disappointment i felt when they told me it was knackered, has spurred me on to do something about it. My mates think ive gone totally insane for even thinking of a DIY project, but its worth a bash!

Wish me luck, because by the christ, im gonna need it :D
