Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

haha, that's an awesome pic. Did you do the classic "watch this?"

It's better to surprise sometimes :p The bonus on the convertible is that the exhaust makes your ears pop around 6500rpm+, while not the fastest of performance cars as far as comparing to modern sports cars of similar power go, it certainly has a lot of character (ultimately one of the main reasons I've always wanted one), and does bring smiles to all occupants :D

There's so much more to a car than it being "as fast as modern day equivalents". It's about character and the whole package.

I'd be surprised and disappointed if modern cars didn't surpass their older equivalents - it's all about progress. That said, some older cars still have more character than their modern counter parts.

It's a balance of what you want - me I prefer a more raw driving experience for now. I'm sure I'll want deep carpeted double glazed luxury in due course - but for now I'm happy with something more symbiotic (hence why I love motorbikes).

Great pic mrk!

On every drive I think how can I ever get bored of that noise and the sense of occasion climbing the rpm :p

I’m pretty confident that had I chosen an SMG version, I’d probably not enjoy it as much. There’s just something a bit more personal about a manual gearbox with an engine like this, though I haven’t driven the SMG on a daily basis so no idea what it’s like to live with.

Car is booked in for oil service tomorrow and a quick health check, MOT is due next month.

Episode 2 of the Autoglass adventure...

Still heard nothing from them so rang the direct line number on the letter and someone picked up virtually instantly. I will simply call this from now on. Anyway, apparently someone will call me back tomorrow between 9 and 5.

I simply cannot understand why it takes weeks to source the trim piece. I have enquired about stock at BMW dealers and they have all said it can be delivered within 3-5 days max.

4PM is my cut off time tomorrow before I phone that number again and state that I now want to order the part myself from BMW and I want written confirmation from them saying they will foot the bill for it.

If they don't agree to this I take it I can show my case to the financial ombudsman or something.

Guess who phoned today? not Autoglass that's who!

I phoned up and basically stated my terms becauyse I can source the part and fit it more efficiently and with better satisfaction.

1: I want the full excess refunded back.
2: I want them to foot the bill for all parts required.
3: I want confirmation in writing that they agree to this.

Apparently it's customer services that will deal with that so I have to wait until tomorrow 9-5:30.

I must add that my finger wasn't behind the shutter trigger there, my mate's was - Though the plan and execution is mine :p Can't drive and shoot at the same time of course!

I think it's high time soon to invest in a suction rig :o

He doesn't drive!

Windscreen update: Some progress.. maybe!

Lady from CS phoned just to go over everything to date, and she is dealing with the situation. She will confirm a few things and once the job is done, will call back to discuss compensation. She agrees that £25 is simply not enougb given the tediousness of everything so far.

I’ve said I will not accept a non genuine part, I said I am happy to buy the part myself and bill them but she said to await warranty to get back to her first as it should not come to that kind of point and she confirmed there's no legit excuse for cases like mine.

Let's see what happens.

Serious windscreen update chaps!

Still, no call to celebrate just yet, I want my full excess refunded too. So now to see if they keep their word on calling back once the job is done to arrange compensation.

Only the initial one that they goofed up on, which will be taken into account and mentioned when they call tomorrow after the job is done.

This Friday I have a day off anyway as I wanted a 3 day weekend to do various things.

I made progress with mine today funnily enough. Second window they ordered from BMW arrived and its booked for the 27th. 2 months after requesting this.

2 months!

I have good news from today. The trim was fitted, it's all legit and the clips are a different design it seems, more sturdier and similar to the door panel clips, with silicon washers each side.

Anyway, I'm happy with the replacement, guy said it's the first time he's ever heard of Autoglass replacing the trim itself but fully agreed that with the hassle and time I've had to waste that it's the least they could have done.

Windscreen looks mint now

Now to wait for the compensation phone call from customer service as promised.

Out of interest mrk, do you have insurance cover for business, as you're obviously doing a lot of driving to weddings etc and taking the people out, so just wondering if you're just risking it or actually covered?

So far the shots I've done have not been on public roads but the venue's own road/driveways leading up to the venue, nevertheless I have full indemnity cover on my policy.

At last!

If I ever need a new screen I think I'm going to remove all the trim myself. At least it won't get ravaged by someone who is just in a hurry to get to his next job or whatever.

It's worth noting that the guy did say that 90% of the time even when careful, that the trim clips have broken purely because they are sat there for years and years and eventually deteriorate and all it takes is some jolting when removing the trim to break them. That and the silicon seals will perish too. So you may well need new clips/seal strips! This is what happened to mine, but the failing from Auitoglass was that their guy didn't point it out and simply bodged it.

Interesting, can I ask the total cost of that? I take it it's like the CSL airbox whereby in normal motorway driving it's no louder than stock M3?

I take it no remap is required for this? I don't want to faff around with that stuff, just want that intake noise. I think I mentioned before that if the other carbon box (mafless) didn't hike up to over £1k and remained at £500 as per the pre-order price then I'd have had that, but this looks better and is simply a direct swap by the looks of it.

No, the car policy is "Business Class 1", so only I can drive it for purposes related to business or profession. The indemnity/public liability cover is via my photographic insurance policy, that covers injury, damage etc.

Edit*
Car is in desperate need of a wash, the sandy water spots all over make me sad :(

Well looks like the Autoglass saga continues, just when I thought part 1 was well and truly out of the way.

The trim has a weather seal that simply wedges in to the bottom lip, so the guy must have taken it off and not remembered to put it on to the new trim and bunged it in the van with the old trim. You can see where it sits from the gap in the lip of the lower weather strip in the pic:

I genuinely didn't notice this on Friday, it's not obvious standing back really.

This is a disaster!

And the best bit? That strip isn't something you can buy on its own either as it doesn't have a part number!

Edit*
They've DMd me saying they will refund the full £75 excess and will show up in my account in 3 to 5 days. They are unsure as to the weather strip I mean though so have said I can simply get it replaced myself and send the bill direct to the lady at Autoglass.

So essentially what this means I end to buy the scuttle trim from BMW which will come with the weather strip as you can't buy just the strip on its own.

What a farce!.

Edit2*
BMW just called me back to say they've found a part number for the strip, £12.13. Great, Will pick that up tomorrow from work.
