Bourbon, Rye and American Whiskey

If anyone is looking for something a bit more special than supermarket stuff then I had a taster of this and it was brilliant.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose: Brown bread with salted butter and chocolate spread, molasses and a touch of tobacco leaf.

Palate: Rich and oily, with Christmas-y spices taking shape at the core.

Finish: Still chocolatey. Hints of fresh apricot and pear flourish right on the end.

Is this anti JD snobbery based on anything objective, or is it just cool to lash out against successful commercial brands? Is it really that bad, low of quality or poor in taste?

JD and coke is one of my all time faves.

It’s an attempt to look cool and sophisticated.

I used to be a fan of the malts but as I have aged (and by snobbery logic have become better) I’ve become much more fond of bourbon.

It’s amazing that something as subjective as taste can be down to.... taste. I suspect bragging rights and the illusion of being able to trump others tastes carry more value now when it comes to choosing a drink.

Jack Daniels is ok, nice enough and it certainly has it's place as it is the most widely available, however there are better bourbon/whiskies out there and it is more interesting to discuss those ones that aren't available everywhere. With the expectation most people will have tried JD.

(Technically they also call it a Tennessee whiskey and it isn't called a Bourbon, although it is made in the Bourbon method).

You've done your own argument a disservice there by saying you like it with coke. Imagine that, mixing something with the world's popular soft drink is nice? Really? Colour me surprised. That's the reason whiskey drinkers look down on JD.

I'm no elitist but I've drunk JD (and variants) on its own and would much sooner go for a decent scotch around the £30-40 mark. I don't drink coke, so there's really no reason to entertain JD.

It's not like their 30 year old elephant tusk barrel aged rye mixed with arctic glacial ice and pumice from the heart of mount doom whiskeys are unique any more now that some companies are adopting the tech to mature whiskey to the equivalent of 30 years in 6 to 8 days

If you enjoy JD then you get the same pleasure the snobs get but for a tiny fraction of the price some of them pay, so I'd say it's a win for the JD drinkers

Bulleit Rye is pretty good.

I quite like Bourbon now as well, but I have loads of single malt to get through still and I don't tend to drink it as much in the warmer month's of the year.

@arctine What others would you suggest which aren't "crap" Supermarket ones?

I’m not suggesting the whiskey is crap, I’m saying that the ones listed can all be found in crap supermarkets with limited variety.

What do you want me to suggest? For around 20 quid I find things like penny packer or rebel yell to be great with coke... for an old fashioned or neat I like Woodford reserve, Elijah Craig or 1792.

Got some Basil Hayden’s on the way now for example. Amazon is a surprisingly but welcome good source for Bourbon.

Jack Daniels themselves say that it isn't a Bourbon:

"Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing."

I don't know enough to say whether there is a large difference or they're basing it on a technicality to try and be different.

Thinking of trying something a bit different. Bulleit Rye has caught my eye for some reason, any good. Bourbon is not my normal thing other than Jim Beam and coke.
