Awful that two young lives were lost yesterday in the sea off Bournemouth beach. The circumstances are very odd. Two people lost their lives, eight rescued from the water. A 40 year old arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. I though initially there may have been a Jet ski involved as you often get them around there, however the police have said no Jet ski or boat was involved. They also said they'd not jumped from the pier.

It brings back memories of when me and a mate got in trouble off the beach in Newquay.

It's a strange story. Hopefully we'll hear something soon.

RIP to those who died.

Bournemouth used to be quiet and boring when I was there decades ago. It looks like it's become a popular resort these days.

Not going to speculate.
All I'm going to say as a someone that grew up in Bournemouth is that the number one thing that was drilled into us when we were young is to never go near the pier strutts or groynes as you can run into big problems.

Would also comment that the lifeguards around Bournemouth are first class and I have no doubt that this could have been much worse without their intervention.

EDIT: Cleared up my post a bit - doesn't say a vessel wasn't involved just no one was hit by one. There is talk of a pleasure boat searched and some comments online about large wash from it.

They only said they weren't hit by a vessel not that one wasn't involved. Given the vague information, that someone has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter (who was "on" the sea) and several injured it is possible they were on a boat which had some kind of mishap.

I suspect this is most likely, someone has taken a group of people out on some sort of small vessel, something has gone wrong for whatever reason and suddenly there's a load of people in the water panicking. They've been quite particular with language used, as you point out.

Edited my post as information was posted a few minutes ago saying a vessel has been searched and there are comments elsewhere about large wash from a vessel.

...and this just goes to show why uninformed speculation is fruitless, as my assumption doesn't make sense in light of that info!

Things can happen so fast in the sea - I remember as a kid playing in a sheltered cove which was normally very docile and a monster wave just came out of seemingly nowhere - dragged me like 20 feet down the beach as it went out - won't lie I was ******* myself a bit.

The next announcement we got was at 4pm about a dangerous riptide in the water and it wasn’t soon after that we saw a couple of swimmers in trouble out to sea.
Looking at the map in the article, they were a fair distance out from the shore, well beyond the pier

Could they of been dragged out to sea by a rip tide/rip currant
riptides are nasty so it's possible, most people try to swim against the current to get back to shore which just ends making them run out of energy to keep swimming while being dragged further out when the best thing you can do is swim parallel to the shore until you're out of it, still doesn't answer why a random 40 year old is arrested and a pleasure boat is being searched though

Sharks. It's got to be sharks. What with global warming and whatnot there must be great white sharks in the Channel! The 40-year old must have been feeding the kids to the sharks!

Yea but there are too many shark activists so they cannot blame sharks, they'll find a man, preferably white British to pin in on.

The daily mail article interview a girl who said the kids we’re jumping from the pier and got carried out to sea by the tide, that kid survived but was hospitalised
