Boxing Day Footie *spoilers be inside*

Technically Mascherano can be named on the teamsheet or bench despite being injured whereas Drogba can't be selected at all. I reckon he'll miss the first game he can play when he returns otherwise it makes punishment redundant.

I suppose there's technically nothing stopping Drogba returning between ACoN's games to play for Chelsea.

Hopefully common sense prevails and he does actually serve his suspension, you've got to remember that the FA are retards though. Bassong 'served' the last game of his suspension (from when he got sent off at the end of last season with Newcastle) when Newcastle played at the start of this season, even though he had already joined Spurs.

Ok now you've confused me, is what I was saying what actually happens? I think I meant actually be at the match but not play, maybe? :p

I'm really confused :p

For some reason I forgot the fact that Mascherano being suspended would mean he wouldn't be available for selection at all while comparing his situation to Drogba's one, I was just thinking about his injury and not being suspended while being injured.

I'm not sure if a player can be named or not on a teamsheet if he was suspended, as I'm sure it's happened in the past where a player has played despite his punishment stating that he should miss that game and he's faced further punishment afterwards. That said incident has also happened recently, maybe last year for a Championship team.

I think I should stop now as I'm confusing myself again. :p

Two poor teams in truth. Derby a poor side, newcastle a poor team.

It was pretty much a carbon copy of the boro game, zero fluidity from the homeside, little crafting on a teamscale. Nolan didn't power one home today, shola wasn't on the end of a lucky breaking ball... 0-0

The result today could be repeated on any given day playing as you have been for the last few months.

You'll go up mind, because that breaking ball will go newcastles way, and the individuals you have, nolan, taylor, guthrie and the like have the ability to hammer it home 9 times from 10.

Next year would be another prem derby/sunderland showing though if ashley is still kicking around and chris is still the manager... it'll be nasty.

Yet another crap Chelsea performance today, it only got anywhere near football when we went 4-4-2 in the 2nd half.
I can't see how we're going to get ourselves out of the rut we're in, we've been making the same mistakes on and off the ball for weeks now :(

....and have the unexpected bonus of being able to deal in the January transfer market. Their closest rivals (in points terms) have more injuries at the moment which should compensate for the effects of the ACoN.

We won't be buying anyone though, CA's said it a few times now:
CA said:
“I can tell you I will not be buying anybody in January. Absolutely no way.
“I am willing to pay a forfeit if I do, even to run round the training ground naked!
“Of course, there are coaches in Italy who say that you should never say anything is 100 per cent. You should always say 99.99 per cent.
“But I am not changing my mind about the transfer window.
“We have a lot of confidence in my strikers. Not only Drogba, not only Kalou, not only Anelka. Also Sturridge and Borini.
“I have not asked for new players to my club. And Roman Abramovich hasn’t asked me if I need any.
“In my opinion, I think that we have good solutions internally even when we lose the African players.
“If you have new players, maybe it’s a problem in February or March, when the others come back and are available. We don’t need them in this moment, to have new players.

If he's telling the truth then it makes the decision to ask for the transfer ban to be postponed until after the appeal odd.

If you're not planning on buying anybody this January then you may as well start the ban now and get 1 of the window's out of the way. You've got nothing to lose.

I hate Chris Hughton. Why does he leave Guthrie out and then when we need a goal, leave him on the bench? It's bad enough playing him on the wing but I'd rather he was there than on the bench!

I think we played extremely well in the first half - reminded me of the 'good times' back in the '90s. Free-flowing football rushing down the wings with decent balls into the box (something we haven't been capable of for at least 5/6 years). However, today, for some reason, we just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

The second half was a different story and the second half performance justifies your assessment of the game. We just fell to pieces.

I do agree that unless we do something radical in the closed-season, we're not going to be able to compete in the Premiership.

Form going into the FA Cup game

Plymouth Argyle - WW
Newcastle United - DD

Getting worried? :p

Nah. ;) Argyle are my second team (Living in Cornwall) and it's good to see them slowly climbing off the bottom of the table but I'll still enjoy giving them a good stuffing in the FA cup.

Probably because of his non-performance against 'Wednesday on Boxing Day.
We seriously lacked a midfield against Sheffield, non of them turned up and Guthrie was just as guilty as the rest.

Today, in the first half at least, the introduction of Smith and R Taylor really helped give the midfield some structure and strength which we lacked on Boxing Day. Don't get me wrong, I like Guthrie but the players have to earn their place in the squad and you've got to go on the most recent past performance. Based on his performance against Wednesday, it was only right that he should be dropped for Smith and/or Taylor.

Point is he can if he needs too if there is some kind of crisis (say Anelka doesn't recover from his injury or whatever, Drogba breaks his leg in Africa or something).

I've heard plenty of league-topping managers say they aren't going to buy anyone and then go ahead and do it anyway, e.g. Fergie.
