I don't understand why they can't find more actual champions for this event (or is it pay to race now). At the weekend Crofty was saying how Petrov was a LADA championship winner years ago, which is pushing the definition a bit.
What championship has Jan Kopecky won? When was the last time Coulthard won a championship?

I bet some people on the forum have won more racing championships than some of these "champions" :D

schumacher had 3 mechanical failure related DNF's while rosberg had no mechanical failures or the odds are schumacher would have had the most points out of them.
also
Schumacher has three 5th place finishes and a 4th place this season compared to Rosberg's two 5th place finishes. While i do believe that schumacher is not the same driver that he was before he retired, i think he still has the skill and determination to win, if provided with a capable car.

Schumi has nothing to prove to anyone, he is simply the greatest driver F1 has ever seen in his prime, a complete driver.

Anyone who thinks his come back takes away from what he achieved is just being silly :)

Petrov won the Russian Formula 1600 championship, and the Lada Revlution Russia, both in 2005

The only Championship Coulthard ever won was the Dunlop Formula Ford Championship in 1989!

Jan Kopecky, nothing.

So yeah, its a bit of a tenuous link :)

yea they seem to be stretching it abit these days they even have a ROC LEGENDS one now... i think johnny herbert did it in 2010 qand barrichello it set to do it this year which shows you dont have to acomplish much to be a legend these days
I think he still needs to prove that is capable of being a true sportsman. That seems to be partly why he did his comeback in the first place, actually.
:D

hes gave someone else a lift before aswell but i cant remember who it was.
im sure people consider hamilton a true sportsmen though because hes british

Imagine if Schumacher had gone to Red Bull at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.

We'd be looking at a 9 time champion, cursing his name and complaining how boring it is for him to "win every race".

I'd like him to win a race in a car that's off the pace, so people can see his raw talent, than moan that he's always been in the fastest car. This is what disappointed me in Canada, when he could have gotten 3rd, but got DRS butt hurt from Webber and Co.

Well said. I've been pretty impressed with MS this year. He's clearly enjoying himself, it's also quite likely that the 2012 Merc will be more competitive than this year's. Personally, his decision to race F1 for another three years seems to have been an excellent one - better than throwing yourself off motor bikes!

But... he has had a car that is off the pace for the last 2 years... and has been beaten by his team mate...

So!? Most of the grid have a car that's off the pace. That's Formula 1. Driving a car that's off the pace is still an amazing thing to do, it's not all about the winning, especially when you already have an exemplary record with absolutely nothing to prove. As for being beaten by his team mate, it was close enough for 'luck' to determine who had the most points at the end of year as arknor just pointed out.

But EVH said he would like to see him do well in an off the pace car so his raw talent shows through...

Yet he's had an off the pace car and has been beaten by his team mate.

A team mate that some people (including arknor) consider to be rather average himself.

Or am I missing something

2010 he was well beaten, considering the time out he had then it was no surprise, this season he was much better and his qualifying really let him down other than that he out-raced Nico imo, the points total might say Nico won but on track Schumacher was better imo.

We see a much more relaxed Michael in this car, if they get close to winning I have no doubt the real Schumi will appear.

Fair point, and I would have to agree, however, we are talking about a driver that people consider to be 'great, with loads of raw skill', and another that the same people consider to be 'barely average'.

For them both to finish close in the same car that surely means that either one isn't as great as people may think, or the other isn't as average as people might think? Otherwise.... Your adding 2+2 and getting Switzerland.

We are also talking about a 42 year old :) MS in his prime would wipe the floor with Nico which is probably why people think he is average.

Skeeter, are you forgetting he's 42! Matching someone not much more than half his age is pretty impressive in itself.

Thats kinda what I'm trying to say.

People are confusing 'is great' with 'was great'.

Without doubt the Schumacher from 10 years ago would have been on the podium in that Merc. But my point is, if Merc employed him hoping to get the Schumacher from 10 years ago, then they must be disappointed with what he is delivering. But conversely, if they employed him knowing he would be equal to Nico, then... Why? Considering who else they could have employed.

Its the point I tried to make a while back in the 2012 thread. I firmly believe that Merc wanted to employ Schumacher alongside Brawn 'somewhere' in the team on a long term plan (much like his 'consultancy' time at Ferrari). Putting him in as a driver was just a way to get him into the Merc Family. Its not really worked, but there is nobody else out there on the market who is a decent replacement.

It was a massive PR boost to have MS join them, Brawn admitted last season that his performances were not good enough and it would need to improve, and I think they did improve quite a lot.

You could ask why Nico is there when he is not thrashing an old man :)
