Break checked and crashed

It gets better every time

Or just carried on in lane 1 when he pulled alongside.

But the Op may have had to go 5 miles out of his way then!

Ive done that myself, messed up not paying attention to where I was and found myself in lane 3 with lots of traffic when reaching my exit so instead of trying to make the exit I went 7 miles to the next one and another 7 miles back. :o

Better than having or causing an accident.

So now I am wondering, with this talk of other vehicles
Did OP speed as much as they did just prior to the junction to get round some/one vehicle (maybe the van).
Which caused him to have to cut across sharply.
Maybe checking his mirror afterwards coincided with the audi breaking braking and hence his panic

Simply whatever the cause the OP was driving far too fast that closely to a junction he wanted to exit from. Get into the correct lane earlier and your driving will feel far less of an issue. Sure some ignorant douches will come hammering down the faster lane(s) and get in front of you.
Just consider that their dangerous driving will eventually lead to many of them having something like a head on with a barrier at some point as they have messed up and their driving isnt as good as their ego believes.

If someone is driving like a dick get away from them, its usually simpler to just slow down for a short period, let them get a little ahead and then speed back up, you can keep an eye on them to avoid them causing you more issues. Hell you can even send webcam footage to the police if you can send a decent amount, so they can deal with it if the person is in the wrong. Its almost always better to use less speed not more.

OP it is terrible driving by you. That should not have happened and it happened because you drove terribly. Own it. Move on.

good idea.

3 way motorway street race is what this sounds like. All more than likely 2.0 diesels.
can't make out reg plate to check the audi's engine, his re-acceleration seemed surprising. (debadged)

Those exit water barrels, like the usa/txs, for the indecisive (or, autopilot driver), would be useful .

I wonder if a modern collision avoidance system would have kicked in and stood on the brakes for you in a different car?

Yeah he did cut in front of the golf.

But at least he was trying to get into the right lane well before the exit.

My question is why didnt you pull over the left hand lane behind the golf?

It seems you accelerated, overtook the golf and van in the outside lane and then would have had to quickly cut both the van and the golf up to get across to the lane 1 in time?

Still your fault.

Still my fault yes. No I did not cut the van or the golf. The golf in fact sped up too to try and catch the audi
