Breaking a padlock :D

This has got to be the best task an IT worker has ever been set :D

Basically, someone who worked here before managed to put the wrong key in a padlock, breaking it and leaving half of it still in the lock.

The task: To break it (or pick it but I can't see that happening since its the wrong key stuck in there). in such a way which will not damage the PC or the desk.

There are many big power tools at my disposal but using them in a way which won't risk blood and guts spewing everywhere is tricky since its under a fixed desk which is fairly low down and awkward to get to.

Well one way to proceed is to get some needle nosed pliers, get the key bit out, and see if there is enough for a key cutter to cut a replacement.

As for the padlock, it will probably need drilling.
 
bolt cutters probably won't do a lot on that unless they are very heavy duty.

Is there anyway of removing the metal latch/bolt that the lock is attached too? may be easier in the long run.

Blow torch/laser cutter would be my weapon of choice :p
 
I can better that.

Try a deputy director of IT, 2 technicians and 2 desktop team members.... trying to break down the door to a disabled toilet, to get a non-disabled girl out, who had gone to use the toilet..... despite the "out of order" sign on the door. :o (Out of order due to lock being broken, thus locking her in for several hours)

As to the lock, it looks like you're out of luck. I'd say its hardened steel, so go for anything you can to get that key bit back out. Superglue on another bit of metal might do it if nothing rlse does.

A: The its hardened steel and is extremely tough, I think probably too much for bolt cutters.

B: Because its so tight under the desk there is not enough room to get the end of the cutters over that part of the lock.
 
its brass . whats the rod attacted to it and are the two holes just for locking or purpose ? could just hacksaw through the bottom hole and use the top one
